SUGGESTED PREMIERS' CONFERENCE
Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. R. G. Menzies
The Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, announced this
morning that he had received a telegram from the Premier of
New South Vales, Mr. Heffron, asking him to arrange a special
Premiers' Conference to discuss the effect of margins on State
finances. Mr. Menzies has acknowledged the telegram and will
be in touch again with Mr. Heffron after he has discussed the
matter with his Cabinet colleagues.

Cabinet has devoted much time to ! resolving the
question of the future of the Canberra University College.
Should it be given full and independent University status or
should it be organically associated with the Australian National
University? We have decided in favour of association.
Mindful of the importance of self-government in
University institutions, we have not attempted to work out any

DENIAL ON TROOPS FOR NORTH BORNEO
Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. R. G. Menzies
The Prime Minister, Mr. MenZies, this afternoon
categorically denied a report published earlier today
that he " is expected to announce earlS next year that
Australian troops will be sent to North Borneo."
Mr. Menzies said that no such proposal had been
put forward and the story was a figment of the imagination
of its author.

COMMONWEALTH PRIME MINISTEI. S! CONFEIENCE
In commenting on the announcement by Mr. MacMillan
that there is to be a meeting of Commonwealth Prime Ministers
in London beginning on the 3rd May, 1960, the Prime Minister,
Mr. Menzies, said that he welcomed this opportunity for an
exchange of views among the leaders of the British Commonwealth.

and declaring them open before I get taken up with my own

PUBLIC SERVICE APPOINTMENTS
STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER.
The Prime Minister ( Mr. Menzies) announced today
that the Government had made appointments to three senior
positions in the Commonwealth Public Service which will become
vacant shortly. Mr. J. E. Collings has been appointed a Commissioner of
the Public Service Board to succeed Mr. G. G. Sutcliffe, C. B. E.,
who retires early next year.
Mr. Collings, aged 44, is at present an Assistant
Commissioner on the Public Service Board's staff. His experience

VISIT TO INDONESIA AND MALAYA
STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER
The Prime Minister ( Mr. Menzies) today gave the
names of members of the party which will accompany him and
Dame Pattie Menzies to Indonesia and Malaya in December.
Mr. Menzies said that a Member of Parliament, Dr. A
J. Forbes, the Member for Barker, will travel with the party.
Officials included in the party will be Miss Hazel
Craig ( Private Secretary), Mr. M. C. Timbs and Mr. J. H. Scholtens
both of the Prime Minister's Department, and Mr. P. R. Heydon

Sir, Ladies and Gentlemen:
This is, cC course, not the first time that I have had
the pleasure of opening the Annual Meeting of the Council. In
fact as I walked in this morning I was reminded of a few facts
that I had almost forgotten. But it is always a great pleasure
to come here because this is always a most important meeting.
