THE RT. HON. R. G. MENZIES ON FRIDAY, 13TH
NOVEMBER, 1959 at 11 A. M.
QUESTE ON: Can you tell us Sir, when* you expect the new Governor-
General to reach Australia?
PRIME MINISTER: Yes, early in February. He would be here well
ahead of the beginning of the 1960 Session so that he
will be able to open it.
QUESTION: Any date fixed for this, Sir? The opening.
PRIME MINISTER: Oh, no. But I mean normally one assumes that it
will be some time in February, but it may be late in
February.

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
CONCERNING THE APPOINTMENT OF THE NEi GOVERNOR-GENERAL.
THURSDAY. 12th NOVIm'BER. 1959.
As Honourable Members know, our present Governor-
General, Field Marshal Sir William Slim, will be returning to
England towards the end of January next after what we all feel
to be a very distinguished term of office in our country. Before
he leaves we will have an opportunity of saying to him some of
those things that are in our hearts and minds and I will therefore
not anticipate them tonight.

CANCELLATION OF OVERSEAS VISIT BY SENATOR
THE HON. W. H. SPOONER, M. M.
STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER.
A visit overseas this month by the Minister for
National Development, Senator Spooner, had been cancelled, the
Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, said today.
Mr. Menzies was commenting on a news item cabled from
Bangkok that Senator Spooner might visit Thailand later this
month. Mr. Menzies said: " Several South East Asian countries
have extended invitations to the Australian Government for a
senior Australian Minister to visit them.

The Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, announced today that the United Kingdom has offered for immediate competition by Australian students post-graduate scholarships to institutions of higher learning in the United Kingdom.

Scholarships are offered under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan, under which governments of Commonwealth countries will provide scholarships and fellowships tenable in their own countries by men and women from
other parts of the Commonwealth.

MR. MENZIES TO VISIT COCOS ISLANDS
STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER, THE RT. HON. R. G. MENZIES
The Prime Minister ( the Right Honourable R. G. Menzies) announced
today that, on the return journey to Australia after his
visit to Indonesia and Malaya he proposed to pay a short visit
( December 12th-13th) to the Cocos Islands an Australian external
territory which he had not visited previously.

Statement by the Prime Minister
In August I concluded a published statement concerning
the actions of teCommonwealth in relation to the Mt. Isa
railway project with these words:
" All that need be said at this stage is that the Queensland
Government and my owm are both active and co-operative, since
we are both enthusiastic about the project, and will do all
that we can to see it completed as a whole, in the interests
of both mineral and pastoral development in Northern Queensland."
