23 JULY 1973.
EQUAL PAY AUSTRALIAN PUBLIC SERVICE
The Prime Minister drew attention to the recent
decision of the Australian Labor Party which endorsed the
principle of equal pay to all eligible females employed by
the Australian Government Service without any phasing in of
the pay increases as is the case in private employment.
The Prime Minister said that the Government
supported the principle of implementing equal pay without
phasing in. In the Government's view, this principal should

THE QUEEN'S VISIT OCTOBER 1973
The Queen's visit to Australia for the opening of the
Sydney Opera House will begin with an arrival in Canberra on the
afternoon of Wednesday 17 October.
Her Majesty will be in Canberra for three days and will
leave by air for Sydney on Saturday 20 October, Her departure
from Australia will be from Sydney on Monday 22 October after
attending an evening function at the Opera House.
The Queenis program of engagements in Canberra is as

On Tuesday I shall be flying to North America, primarily
to attend the meeting of the 32 Commonwealth Heads of Government in
Ottawa,. Before leaving I want to explain to you the reasons for the
Government's historic decision which I announced this week with my
colleague, Cairns to make an immediate reduction of 25 per cent

AT THE ALBURY TRADE FAIR SATURDAY 21 JULY, 1973
I am glad of the opportunity to visit the Albury Trade
Fair ( this year entitled " New Cities Expo ' 73" 1) and speak to you
tonight. The scope and quality of the Fair and certainly its
title are an encouraging symbol of what we hope to achieve in
this, our first growth centre4

The Prime Minister announced today that in.
keeping with the general policy on the title of Australian
Government bodies, the title of the nation's public service,
at present generarly referred to as the " Commonwealth
Public Service, is to be changed to " Australian Public
Service" Mr. Whitlam said, in making this announcement, that
amendments to the Public Service Act would be necessary to

TARIFF REDUCTION
1. The Prime Minister and the Minister for Overseas
Trade and for Secondary Industry today announced a decision
taken by the Australian Government for a reduction of

MOVEMENT OF AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT STAFF TO ALBURY-WODONGA
The Prime Minister announced today that the Public
Service Board would establish a Joint Consultative Committee
on the movement of Australian Public Service staff to Albury-
Wodonga. The Joint Consultative Committee would bring
together representatives of staff organisations, departments
and the Public Service Board to advise the Board on matters
such as the detailed arrangement of a transfer program of

NATIONAL ANTHEM
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, in Perth today
issued the following statement on the selected entries for
the National Anthiem. Quest:.
" With a National Anthem it is the music which
really matters. We are still waiting to hear from our
composers. " Composers are not obliged to use any of the six
sets of words chosen from those submitted by the public.
They can write their own words if they wish or collaborate
with any writer. " The Government is niot imposing any anthem on

Federal Cabinet has approved amendments to the
Public Service Act to enable the Public Service Board
to grant permission to public servants to become directors
of companies and societies in certain prescribed
circumstances. At the present time, unless the company is a
co-operative society, there is a prohibition against public
servants holding directorships in companies and incorporated
societies, such as building societics formed for the
purpose of providing home finance for public servants.
