FRENCH NUCLEAR TESTS
The Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs,
Mr Whitlam, said today that the Government had reason to believe
that the French Government had exploded today another nuclear
device in the Pacific the fifth in the Dresent series.
Mr Whitlam said that his previous remarks regarding
earlier French tests applied equally to this latest explosion.

NEW SECRETARY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS NEXT YEAR
The Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs,
Mr. Whitlam, today announced the appointment of Mr. Alan
Renouf, at present Ambassador to France and to UNESCO, to
succeed Sir Keith Wailer as Secretary of the bepartment of
Foreign Affairs. Mr. Whitlam said Sir Keith would begin
pre-retirement leave on 2nd January, 1974. Mr. Renouf
will assume duty on 3 January 1974.
Mr Renouf, who is 54, entered the Department

GOVERNMENT POLICY ON THE MOTOR INDUSTRY
STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER,
MR. E. G. WHITLAM AND THE
MINISTER FOR SECONDARY INDUSTRY,
DR. J. F. CAIRNS
Cabinet has laid down new rules and objectives for
the Australian motor industry. The Government desires to
improve the efficiency with which the community's productive
resources are used and to recognise the interests of consumers.

AUSTRALIA/ JAPAN MINISTERIAL MEETING
The Prime Minister has accepted an invitation from
the Japanese Government to make an official visit to Japan
from 26 to 31 October this year.
This will be only the third time that an Australian
Prime Minister has visited Japan. Previous visits were
made by Sir Robert Menzies in 1957 and Mr. Gorton in 1970.
Mr. Whitlam's visit will underline the importance which
the Australian Government attaches to Australia's relations

FRENCH NUCLEAR TEST
The Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs,
Mr Whitlam, said today that the Government had reason to believe
that the French Government had exploded today another nuclear
device in the Pacific the fourth in the present series,
Mr Whitlam said that radioactive fallout from earlier
French tests in this year's series had now been detected in
Australia, indicating a clear breach of the International

Government was concerned about systems of wage

THE PREMIER OF NEW SOUTH WALES, SIR ROBERT ASKIN AND THE PREMIER OF
VICTORIA, MR. R. HAMER
The Australian Government and the State Governments of
New South Wales and Victoria have agreed upon a program to improve
the standards of living and opportunities available to residents,
in the Western Sectors of Sydney and Melbourne.

In a statement today, the Prime Minister said:
0 " The Government has reason to believe that
the Government of France has exploded today another
nuclear device in the Pacific.
The previous French tests have attracted
world-wide opposition. I am sure that this latest
test will be equally condemned. The Australian
SGovernment will take all appropriate steps to bring
to a halt these dangerous experiments, which are
carried out in defiance of law and morality."
