RECENT EVENTS IN CHILE
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, said today that
the news of the violent overthrow of the constitutionally
elected Government of Chile, and the tragic death of President
Allende, would come as a profound shock to the Australian
people. Mr. Whitlam said that, as a democrat and a socialist,
he had been greatly saddened that men who had sworn to uphold
the constitution of their country had betrayed a long and noble

PRESS STATEMENT NO. 128

ROYAL COMMISSION ON PETROLEUM
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, announced today that
the Premier of New South Wales, the Honourable Sir Robert Askin,
had agreed to a request to make available Mr. Justice
W. H. Collins, of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, as sole
Royal Commissioner to conduct this inquiry. The Prime Minister
expressed the Australian Government's appreciation for the
co-operation and generosity of the Premier of New South Wales

The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, announced today that his foreshadowed visit to China this year would take place from 31 October to 3 November.

The visit will be the first official visit to China by an Australian Prime Minister, but it will be Mr Whitlam's second visit. He first visited China in July 1971 when Leader  of the Opposition.

MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE FOR THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF SOUTH-EAST
ASIA
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, announced in Canberra
today that Australia will participate in the next meeting of the
Ministerial Conference for the Economic Development of South-East
Asia. The meeting will be held in Tokyo on 12-13 October. It was
proposed that the Special Minister of State would represent
Australia at the Ministerial Conference after his attendance at
the United Nations General Assembly.

Inflation is the major economic problem facing us today. It is robbing people by reducing the purchasing power of their savings. It is altering the distribution of income in an arbitrary and often vicious way. It is distorting resource allocation and encouraging a rush into supposedly inflation-proof real assets such as land or housing. It is anathema to all of us and rightly so.

Mr. Kenneth Tribe, Acting Chairman of the
Australian National Anthem Quest Sub-Commnittee, announced today
that over 1300 entries had been received in the words and music
section of the Quest which closed yesterday.

The Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs,
Mr Whitlam, today welcomed the news that agreement had been
O reached at New Delhi for the resolution of some of the issues
that have remained outstanding between India, Pakistan and
Bangladesh since the war in 1971.
