FOREIGN AFFAIRS APPOINTMIENTS
The Prime Minister and Acting Minister for Foreign
Affairs, Mr Whitlam, announced today two senior diplomatic
appointments. Mr M. R. Booker, currently Ambassador to Italy, has been
appointed Australian Ambassador to Yugoslavia. He has also been
concurrently appointed as non-resident Ambassador to Romania
and Bulgaria. Mr J. E. Ryan, at present First Assistant

INDIAN GIFT TO QUEENSLJAND
FLOOD VICTIMS
The Prime Minister and Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs,
Mr Whitlam, said today that he had been delighted by India's
friendly gesture in making available 20,000 lbs. of tea to
Australia for distribution to families affected by the recent
flooding in Queensland.
The offer of the gift of tea was made by India' s
Prime Minister, Mrs Gandhi, and conveyed through her Foreign
Secretary, Mr Kewal Singh, who is in Canberra to lead the

PRODUCTION OF SUPERPHOSPHATE REFERRED TO INDUSTRIES ASSISTANCE
COMMISSION
As a result of a reference sent to the Industries
Assistance Commission by the Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, today,
the Commission will examine the need for the continuation of
the tariff on super-phosphate.
Mr. Whitlam has asked the Commission to inquire into
and report on whether assistance currently accorded the production
of superphosphate in Australia should be continued and, if so,
the nature and extent of such assistance.

APPOINTMENT OF GOVERNOR-GENERAL
It is announced today from Government House, Canberra,
that Her -Majesty The Queen has graciously approved the
appointment of the Hon. Sir John Kerr K. C. EI. G., to be
Governor-General of Australia. He will take up office at the
end of June this year when the present Governor-General,
Sir Paul Hasluck, relinquishes his appointment.

NATIONAL ESTATE PROJECTS FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The Australian Government has offered Western Australia $ 330,000
this financial year for projects to preserve the National Estate.
The grants are being made to help a wide variety of projects
put forward by the Western Australian Government on behalf of
Government authorities, the National Trust and local government bodies.

THIS IS THE FIRST MAJOR ADMINlISTRATIVE BUILDING
ERECTED IN TASMANIA BY ANY AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT SINCE
FEDERATION. THE NEED FOR THE BUILDING AROSE IN THE LATE
1960s WHEN THE LACK OF SUITABLE PREMISES AVAILABLE FOR
LEASING FORCED THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT TO BUY LAND
AND PLAN THE BUILDING. ITS CONSTRUCTION IS VERY MUCH
IN ACCORD WITH THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT'S POLICY ON OFFICIAL

ACTING PRIME MINISTER:. Today the Cabinet considered a number of
submissions and the first one was on recreation leave and maternity
leave. The Cabinet gave further consideration today to papers
prepared for us which raised issues requiring clarification before
our earlier decisions on an additional week's recreation leave for
Commonwealth staff and maternity leave for them can be implemented.
