FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Press Statement No. 202

FLOODS
I am profoundly concerned at the renewed flooding
in Queensland and New South Wales and the plight of many
families. I extend the Government's sympathy to all those
affected by the floods.
I have sought immediate and up-to-date reports
on the flood situation. The Leader of the Country Party,
Mr. Anthony, has drawn my attention to the situation in
Lismore and Murwillumbah It is tragic that further flooding
should occur so soon after the recent devastation in Queensland

NATIONAL BROADCAST
Good evening. I want to talk to you tonight about some basic issues
of democracy, about your fundamental rights as citizens in a free
society. At the Senate elections later this year the Government

AUSTRALIAN COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS

The Visual Arts Board of the Australian Council for the Arts has embarked on an imaginative project known as " Art in Public". The Board believes it has a responsibility to provide works of art in areas that are culturally underprivileged. It wants these works to be in public places where people will see and enjoy them.

I am happy to announce that I have approved the first three projects for the " Art in Public" program.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
International Women' s Day will be observed tomorrow.
It is an appropriate time for me to draw attention to the need
for continued efforts to remove discrimination against women.
It is a fundamental objective of the Government to ensure
respect for civil liberties and human rights and for that reason
the Government is committed to the promotion of ecsual rights
for women. Since coming to office, the Government has removed
