PRIME MINISTER PRESS STATEMENT NO. 274

VISIT OF PRIME MINISTER TANAKA
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, said today that
the Prime Minister of Japan, Mr Kakuei Tanaka, would visit
Australia from 31 October to 6 November 1974.
Mr Whitlam recalled that during his visit to
Japan in October 1973 he had invited Mr Tanaka to visit
Australia and Mr Tanaka had accepted this invitation.
Mr Tanaka's visit will be the first by a
Japanese Prime Minister since Mr Tanaka's predecessor,

TUESDAY 18 JUNE 1974
PRIME MINISTER: Ladies and gentlemen, you know that the applications
to the Chief Australian Electoral Officer, for recounts in Queensland
and Western Australia have been rejected. The count is already complete
also in Tasmania and South Australia. The count is not finished yet in
either New South Wales or Victoria. It appears unlikely that the results
will be so close as to justify a recount in either of those States.

CHINESE NUCLEAR WEAPONS TEST
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, said today that
the Australian Government had received confirmation that the
Chinese Government had exploded a nuclear weapon device in the
atmosphere over its territory yesterday.
The Australian Government understood that the Chinese
explosion had been somewhat less than a megaton in size, and
that it appeared to have occurred at Lop Nor at about 4 p~ m.

STATEMENT BY PRIME IaNISTER AFTER FRENCH NUCLEAR WEAPONS TEST
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, said today that
the Australian Government had reason to believe that the
French Government had exploded a nuclear weapon device in the
atmosphere over Mururoa atoll today 17 June.
The Prime Minister said that it was a matter of

Urban Public Transport
The Australian Government has successfully completed
negotiations for a $ 73 million program for a major improvement
in urban public transport in the six capital cities.
All States have now signed the Urban Public Transport
Assistance Agreement in which thr Australian Government will provide
two-thirds of the cost of urban transport projects in the capitals.
Under the agreement the following non-repayable grants
will be made to the States over a 5 year period:

WIFE OF PRIME MINISTER TO LAUNCH NEW ANL SHIP

Honourable C. K. Jones, M. P.)
The Australian Minister for Transport, Mr C. K. Jones,
said today that Mrs Margaret Whitlam, the wife of the Prime
Minister, would launch the Australian National Line's new vessel,
Australian Emblem, in Japan on 9 August.
The launching of the 23,000 tonne vehicle/ deck container
vessel would take place at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries Shipyard

Arrangements have been made with the Bishop of
Canberra and Goulburn, the Right Reverend C. A. Warren,
for a memorial service for the former Governor-General
of Australia, His Royal Highness The Prince Henry,
Duke of Gloucester, who died in London on 10 June. The
service will be held at St. John's Church, Canberra,
when the Parliament meets in July, probably in the

AUSTRALIAN GOVERN4MENT TO ASSIST SYDN4EY
THEATRE
The Australian Government will provide financial
assistance to enable the Nimrod Theatre Company to establish
a permanent theatre in Sydney.
The Government has approved a grant of $ 123,64r
to the company to help pay the cost of its new theatre
in Elizabeth Street, Sydney.
The Minister for Tourism and Recreation,
Mr Frank Stewart, has approved the grant after receiving
advice from the Australian Council for the Arts.

today announced that the Honourable F. M. Daly, Minister
