QUEENSLAND FLOODS LOANS TO. SPORTING BODIES
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, aftnounced
today that the Australian Government had agreed to provide
financial assistance to Queensland for the provision of
loans to needy sporting bodies whose assets sustained
severe damage as a result of the floods which occurred
in the first quarter of this year.
The loans would be made by the State
Government to those bodies which had exhausted alternative

Ladies and gentlemen, first I can inform you of some
appointments. The Government has decided to appoint Mr Philip
Evatt, B. Sc., as a Judge of the Australian Industrial
Court; Mr Justice Starke of the Victorian Supreme Court and
Mr John Dixon of Melbourne to the Board of Trustees of the
Australian War Memorial; and Brigadier A. B. Stretton as
Director-General of the Natural Disasters Organisation. The
brigadier will be promoted to major-general. Cabinet has also

NEW LAND DEAL FOR NORTHERN TERRITORY ABORIGINALS
The Prime. Minister, Mr Whitlam, today announced that
Cabinet had accepted in principle the recommendations made in
the Second Report of the Aboriginal Land Rights Commission.
, Mr Whitlam said that the recommendations provided for
full Aboriginal ownership of all existing reserves in the
Northern Territory and certain other lands and for the establishment
of a Land Commission to enquire into Aboriginal land claims and

APPOINTMENTS TO THE INDU TRIES ASSISTANCE COMMISSION
Th( Prime Minister, Mr Whitlan, announced today
that he has recommended to the Executive Council the appointment
of Mr P. 13. Westerway as a Commissioner of the IAC. The
Prime Minister also announced~ the appointment of Dr J. Melville,
CMG and Messrs Fisk, Poulton, Brown and Grace as Associate
Commissioners of the Industries Assistance Commission.
Mr Westerway's appointment will fill the vacancy

INDUSTRIES ASSIS ' ANCE COMMISSION REPORT PAPER
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, announced today that
the Government has accepted the recommendations of the
Industries Assistance Commission in its report on paper.
The Government's decision to implement the
Commission's recommendations will mean that a general rate
of duty of 20 percent will apply to uncoated and coated
printing and writing papers which represents a slight

NEW APPOINTMENTS
Cabinet has approved the following appointments:-
1. Mr P. G. Evatt, as a judge of the
Australian Industrial Court.
2. Mr Justice Starke, of the Victorian Supreme
Court, and Mr John Dixon of Melbourne, to the

NEW MEMBERS OF AUSTRALIAN COUNCIL FOR THE
ARTS AND ITS BOARDS
The Prime minis-ter today announced the names of 46
new members of the Australian Council for the Arts and its
seven specialist boards. These new members will replace
foundation members of the Council and Boards whose terms end
on 30 June. In announcing the names the Prime Minister said that
he had decided to implement at this stage the principle of
rotating membership on which the new organisation would be based.

BRITISH NUCLEAR WEAPONS TEST
The Australian Government has repeatedly made
clear its opposition to nuclear weapons testing by any
country in any environment. In particular the Government
has given its strong support to resolutions in the
United Nations directed against nuclear weapons testing
which is known to have been conducted systematically over
the years by the United States and the Soviet Union. Very
