APPOINTMENTS TO THE PRICES JUSTIFICATION TRIBUNAL
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, announced today
the appointment of the following as full-time members of
the Prices Justification Tribunal:
Mr. K. Elliott
Mr. G. N. Fisher
Mr. P. C. Rodda
Mr. Whitlam said that the Government was reinforcing
the Tribunal at this time because of the increased
responsibilities placed upon it by recent amendments to the
Prices Justification Act and because of the already great
workload on the Tribunal.

REFERENCE TO THE TEXTILES AUTHORITY
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, announced today that
he had sent a reference to the Textiles Authority within the
Industries Assistance Commission covering a wide range of men's,
women's, children's and infants' clothing, hosiery and gloves.
Mr. Whitlam said that this action was being taken as a result of
high and rising levels of imports and an apparent total
availability of such goods on the Australian market substantially
in excess of previous levels.

PLAGUE LOCUSTS
The Prime Minister today released the text of a
letter of appreciation from the Queensland Graingrowers
Association. This follows Mr. Whitlam's announcement on Monday
that the Australian Government would participate on a
dollar for dollar basis in a $ 720,000 scheme for locust
control in Queensland.
The letter reads as follows:

ASSISTANCE TO THE AUSTRALIAN MOTOR INDUSTRY
A new plan to assist and strengthen the Australian
motor industry was announced today by the Prime Minister,
Mr. Whitlam. He said that it was the Government's intention
that the new policy would operate for ten years and would
therefore provide a stable framework within which industry
would confidently plan.
Mr. Whitlam said assistancee would be based on a
company average local content plan of 85%. This would be

NATIONAL BROADCAST
In Parliament last night I outlined a number
of measures which the Government is taking to deal with
some of our current economic difficulties.
The two greatest of these are, of course,
rapid inflation and rising unemployment. In a modern
economy like Australia, in a mixed economy like Australia,
these are now twin problems; they are interlocked. This
is a situation we find throughout the world in all
similar economies, in all comparable countries. It's the

AUSTRALIAN PUBLIC SERVICE
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, M. P.,
said in his statement on the economy in Parliament this
evening that he would issue a statement on the question
of staff numbers in the Australian Public Service. In his
statement in Parliament, Mr Whitlam said that:
" Our program of Government expenditure has
been Achieved without excessive increases in the number of

AUSTRALIAN~ AMERICAN FESTIVAL 1976
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, today announced plans
for a nationwide Australian American Festival in 1976. Mr.
Whitlam said he had accepted an invitation to be the joint
patron of the festival with the United States Ambassador to
Australia, Mr. Marshall Green.
The festival would co-incide with celebrations in the
United States to mark the bicentenary' of American independence.
