Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Menzies
The Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, announced
today that, during the absence overseas of the Minister
for External Affairs, the Minister for Works, Senator
Gorton, would act as Minister for External Affairs.
Mr. Hasluck will leave Australia tomorrow on a visit
to countries in South East Asia, returning on 21st June.
He will again go overseas on 29th June, to be in London at the

Mr. Mayor, Councillor Ryan and Parliamentary Colleagues and
Ladies and Gentlemen You know, these toasts to Parliament are always
dubious affairs never more dubious than tonight. Here's this
wretched fellow, O'Brien ( Laughter) who has masqueraded for many
years as a friend of mine; he sandwiches me between himself and
Arthur Rylah who speaks after me. This, I venture to say, is a

This is a significant date in history. It marks
the close of the life of one of the most remarkable men of our
time. Mr. Nehru was the maker of modern India. He had
survived, with a singular balance of mind, both hardships and

Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Menzies
The Prime Minister said today that the Commonwealth
Government would contribute 5,000 towards the cost
of erecting an appropriate fountain in Chifley Square,
Sydney, fronting the Common. realth Centre Building, Chifley
Square is the open area created by the intersection of Hunter
Street and Elizabeth Street Extension and was recently so
named by the Sydney City Council in memory of the late

ANZAC JUBILEE PILGRIMAGE TO GALLIPOLI

The Prime Minister ( Sir Robert Menzies) announced
today that the Government had decided to make a grant of
œ C20,000 to the Returned Servicemen's League to assist the
League with its plans to mark the Jubilee of Anzac, which
falls next year, with a pilgrimage to Gallipoli,

ACADEMIC SALARIES
Honourable members will recall that last year,
when announcing the Government's programme of aid for
universities during the 1964-66 triennium, I foreshadowed
the establishment of an Inquiry to advise the Government on
the levels of academic salaries which could appropriately be
adopted by the Coionwrealth for the purpose of calculating
recurrent grants for universities.
