Statement in the House of Representatives by the Acting Prime
Minister. The Rt. Hon, J. McEwen, M. P.
While the Commonwealth Banking Corporation will not be
formally established until the legislation has been proclaimed,
which will not be until about the end of the year, it is necessary
to proceed at once with the appointment of the Board of the
Corporation, so that the re-organization necessary to give effect
to the legislation and to constitute the Banking Corporation can

STATEMENT BY THE ACTING PRIME MINISTER. RT. HON. J, McEWEN.
The Federal Cabinet has not, as reported, approved a
five-year plan for the development of Canberra at a cost of
million from ist July next.
No decision in these terms has been made and the
programme for governmental works and housing in Canberra will
continue to be subject to the normal annual budget procedures.
Cabinet has given consideration to plans for the
development of Canberra and has decided that, in addition to

outline progrqmme of the visit to Australia during August and
September of this year of Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra
of Kent. ( FOR INFORMATION: This is a simultaneous announcement,
together with the Premiers of the three States Her Royal Highness

ANZAC DAY MESSAGE FROM HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN
The Prime Minister announced to-day that His Excellency
The Governor-General had received the following message from Her
Majesty " Once again my thoughts are with my people in the
Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand in the
commemoration of Anzac Day, a day of glorious
memory of all those whose courage and devotion
to duty did so much to ensure victory in two-

VISIT OVERSEAS BY THE PRIME MINISTER
Statement by the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister ( Mr. Menzies) will leave Sydney
on 28th April, 1959, in s. s. " 1ORCADES11 for San Francisco.
At Auckland on Friday, 1st May, Mr. Menzies will meet
the Prime Minister of New Zealand ( Mr. Walter Nash).
In North America, Mr. Menzies will make visits to
Ottawa, Washington and New York. On Thursday, 21st May, he
will meet the Prime Minister of Canada ( Mr. John Diefenbaker)
for personal discussion, and subsequently meet the Canadian

WEDDING PRESENT TO THE CROWN PRINCE OF JAPAN
Statement by the Prime Minister
Australia has presented a watercolour, " Mt. Serle,
FLinders Ranges" by Hans Heysen to the Crown Prince of Japan
and his bride on the occasion of their marriage.
Sir Alan Watt, Australian Ambassador to Japan, made
the presentation. The watercolour is a fine example of Heysen's work
and the Crown Prince expressed great pleasure when receiving
it. The painting bears a plaque reading in part " From the
Government and people of the Commonwealth of Australia,

MEETING OF COMMONWEALTH AND STATE OFFICIALS
ON OVERSEAS INVESTMENT.
Statement by the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister announced today that a meeting of
Commonwealth and State officials would be held in Canberra
next Monday ( 6th April) to discuss action being taken in
Australia and abroad by the Commonwealth and State Governments
to attract private investment from overseas.
Last September Mr. Menzies announced that the Commonwealth
would review, co-ordinate and, where necessary, improve the

MINISTER FOR TRADE FOR WASHINGTON TALKS
Statement by the Prime Minister ( Mr. Menzies)
The Prime Mvinister ( Mr. Menzies) announced today that
the Minister for Trade ( Mr. McEwen) would leave for the United
States on Thursday to discuss a number of trade matters in
Washington. Mr. Menzies said the visit would be short and Mr. MeEwen
would return to Australia before he himself left for abroad.
Mr. Menzies said that Mr. McEwen's talks would cover a
range of subjects which could be best dealt with on a Ministerial
