FOR MEDIA 16 MARCH 1990
I deeply regret the execution in Iraq of the British-h~ sed
Journalist, Mr Farzad Bazoft.
Like other members of the world community, I sent a personal
message to President Saddam Hussein, asking him to exercise
clemency in this case. I am deeply disappointed that my
appeal and those from so many other quarters were ignored by
the Iraqi Government.
Australia has a consistent and universal policy of
opposition to the death penalty, which we regard as a
fundamental violation of human rights.

Liberal-National Party public service changes would cost
taxpayers at least an extra 885 million a year.
Coalition public administration changes would also add
another 2,900 bureaucrats to the public payroll.
The extra costs and increased public service numbers would
result from disputes between the two parties over the carveup
of Ministerial responsibilities.
The Hlawke Labor Government has introduced sweepinig reforms
to public administration.

MELBOURNE 15 MARCH 199o
Friends It gives me enormous satisfaction to stand before you today

FOR MEDIA 15 MARCH 1990
I have today reaffirmed the Labor Government's unequivocal
commitment to a fair, balanced and non-discriminatory
immigration policy, and to multiculturalism as a policy for
all Australians.
Foundations for the Future, the ALP's election policy
document, summarizes the Government's significant
achievements of the past seven years in the areas of
immigration, ethnic affairs and multiculturalism.
These policies will continue under the fourth Hawke
Government and will be supplemented by a number of further

PM: If there's any sign of panic in this election, it's not
on our side of politics. The panic . is confined to the
conservativos as well. it might be. What has happened is

MURPHY: Prime Minister, you head a government but
yesterday you and the Treasurer were trying to talk
interest rates down. Is this an indication of how
worryingly tight this election is for you, that you and
Mr Keating decide to comment on interest rates within
hours of each other, something you've previously been
reluctant to do?
PM: We've been talking about interest rates from the
beginning of the election Paul. I was doing no more,
