PRIME MINISTER
FOR MEDIA 19 MARCH 1990
It was with deep regret that I learned of the death of the
Honourable Robert Katter.
Bob Katter had long and distinguished service in the
Commonwealth Parliament of 24 years as the Member ( National
Party) for Kennedy, Queensland. This service included a
period as Minister for the Army in the McMahon Ministry.
In recognition of Bob Katter's distinguished contribution to
Australia, and as a mark of respect, the Government will
accord him a State Funeral. The service will be held in the

concluding remarks to that Statement that further measures
to preserve and enhance the environment would be taken by my
Government. And I said earlier this year that I would be
issuing a progress report on the Environment Statement.
Today I am meeting those commitments.
While the purpose of this report is to inform you of the
considerable progress that has already been made in
implementing the undertakings given in ' Our Country, Our
Future', I would not wish anyone to think that the task is

CSIRO DIVISION OF ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH
ASPENDALE, VICTORIA 19 MARCH 1990
I am delighted to be here at the CSIRO Division of
Atmospheric Research to inspect your research work on the
changes taking place in the regional and global atmosphere.
Bob Chynoweth has told me directly of the fine work being
done here. It is vitally important work, for there is no
greater global environmental concern than the greenhouse

JOURNALIST: The Opposition's rejection of the MFP. Does
that reflect a racist overtone?
PM: Well, I think it's a very unfortunate development.
This proposal has been on the table now for a couple of
years. It's something that is about Australia's future.
Australia has to have a future in which it has the best
technology available to it. It is a tragedy that has
been deliberately and opportunistically misrepresented by

PRIME MINISTER
FOR MEDIA 18B MARCH 1990
1 extend to Mrs Katter and family sincere condolences from
Hazel and myself.
Although Bob Katter was on the other side of the political
fence we had developed a warm personal relationship.
He was energetic in the pursuit of his beliefs and in
particular he had a deep commitment to the multiculturalism
of Australia.
He had a great sense of humour and those who will miss
Bob Katter will be found across the whole spectrum of
Australian politics.

PM: I have released today a paper which is proof
positive of what I've been saying from the beginning of
this campaign that a Party or a coalition which is not
capable of governing itself is not capable of governing
the country. We have the situation where after the last
election I reduced the number of departments,
Commonwealth, to 18 and now Mr Peacock is saying that
he'll increase that to 25 or 26 he doesn't seem to be

Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Hawke. Thank you for your time.
PM: Good to be with you, Alan.
JONES: Prime Minister, can I use an analogy that you might
appreciate, if you don't mind being called the Vo Rogue of
Australian politics. Getting on a bit in years, still the crowd
favourite, carrying a lot of weight in the saddle, form a bit

CARLETON: Prime Minister and Mr Keating thank you very
much for coming to the studios tonight. I would just
like to find out for the viewers the strictures under
which this discussion is being recorded this evening. In
21 years of interviewing Mr Keating, since he first came
into the Parliament back in 1969, he has never imposed
conditions on his television appearances with me. He has

FOR MEDIA 16 MARCH 1990
In view of the misleading Statements made by the Coalition
after my Campaign Launch on 8 March 1990 1 wish to make
completely clear the funding basis for the new Co-operative
Research Centres.
This follows a letter to me from Professor Wicken, the
President of the Federation of Australian Scientific and
Technological Societies, expressing concern that this
excellent initiative had been misrepresented by the
Opposition, causing some confusion in the scientific
