JOURNALIST: How much more difficult does the Democrats
decision on preferences going to make your task in
Western Australia, particularly in seats like Stirling
and Cowan?
PM: If it were to stick, it would obviously I think have
some marginal impact but I doubt very much whether the
Democrats can in all seriousness stick to this decision
because it obviously means that the Democrats are asking

FOR MEDIA 13 MARCH 1990
It was with deep regret that I learned of the death of
Sir Reginald Wright.
After serving in Tasmania's House of Assembly from
1946-49, Sir Reginald served as a Senator for Tasmania
from 1949-78. He was Minister for Works from 1968-72 in
the Gorton and McMahon Governments.
In recognition of Sir Reginald's distinguished
contribution to Australia and as a mark of respect the
Government will accord him a State Funeral.
The service will be held in the Uniting Church, Reiby

WARNOCK; The polls as well as that big undecided vote also
show disillusionment and cynicism with the major parties and
move to the independents. Why do you think that has
happened, how much blame do you take for the fact that you
seem to be dealing with a cynical electorate this time

Diana that I think one of the main reasons for the move to

As members of the Commonwealth all around the world
celebrate Commonwealth Day 1990, the Commonwealth has
cause to be exceptionally proud of its role,
particularly in helping to bring change to southern
Africa. Australia was actively involved in Namibia's transition
to democracy and we look forward to welcoming Namibia as
the Commonwealth's fiftieth member on its Independence
Day on 21 March.
All Commonwealth members have also welcomed Nelson
Mandela's release and the recent reforms announced by

detract from the record of the Accord the 60 percent

LYNEHAM: Prime Minister, thanks for joining us.
PM: Pleasure.
LYNEHAM: The prevailing wisdom is that voters are very
cynical at the moment. Do you agree with that?
PM: No, I think the correct statement though Paul is
that probably more people are going to cast a vote for
the non-major parties than before. And as I've said, I
think one of the major explanations of that is of the
increased interest in environmental issues that has
