Sir Ninian GStphen, AK, GCMG, GCVO, KBE, will make State
Visits to Nalayoia and Singapore from 1-7 September. He
will be accupanied by Lady Stephen.
The Government attaches considerable importance to
Australia'o relations with countries in South East Asia and
looks forward to the continuation during my third Government
of the clona ties that exist with all the ASEAN countries.

I havo sent the following mescage to President Reagan
I was delighted to receive your letter informing me and
the pecpl3 of Australia that you had signed legislation
authorising a national gift from the United States to
Australia to mark our Bicentenary.
The gift, to be used to provide an American Gallery and
exhibit at our National Maritime Museum, will
commenorate the shared maritime history of our two
natione and stand as an enduring symbol of
Australian-American friendship.

The 35th Parliament will be opened on Monday 14 September
1987. It ill be opened by the Governor-General's deputy at
11.00am. His Excellency the Governor-General will deliver
the opening speech at approximately 3.30pm that afternoon.
The proc7' nation fixing the time and date of the opening has
been signod by the Governor-General and will be published in

FOR MEDIA 29 JULY 1987
The Primo 1inister today chaired a meeting of representatives
of the coal industry workforce, coal mining companies, the
Queensland and NSW State Governments and the Commonwealth
Government. Following a constructive discussion, during which there was
a positive contribution from all parties, it was agreed that
there would be an acceleration of negotiations at the
enterprise level about changes to improve mine viability and
secure the future of Australia's largest export industry.

FOR MEDIA 24 JULY 1987
The third Hawke Ministry was sworn in at Government House,
Canberra, this morning. The Governor-General had available
to hm the advice of the Commonwealth Solicitor-General,
Dr Gavan Griffith, QC, to the effect that there is no
constitutional bar to more than one Minister administering a
Department of State.
A copy of that advice is available, on request, from the
Priwo Rinister's press office.
The Governor-General also approved the new Administrative
Arrangemento Order.

I have decid ed to recommend to the Governor-General that he
approve major changes to the structure of Commonwealth
administration. He has-agreed to my making an early
announcement of my proposed recommendations. The changes
are aimed at achieving substantial enhancement of the
decision-making process and at removing overlap and
duplication of functions.
