election for a now government is significant s0 its perhaps
cliche ridden to say that this Is one of the most significant
elections in a long time. I've said before that in maq# ways
Australia is in the ambulance chronically ill. This

The attached tables and graphs provide a comparison o2 the
position of various types of families under the Liberal
proposals cc compared with Labor's well targetted family
package. They show:
Labor's proposals benefit the needy, the Liberals the
well oHf allowing for the effects of extra health
costs, the loss of the 1.5 per cent second
tier wage increase and the potential impact
of the promised massive Liberal spending

During my visit to China in February 1984 1 outlined the
basic elemonts of an initiative to engage Australian and
Chinese fi. emsm ore closely in the massive expansion of the
Chinese irc and steel making industry which is currently
underway.
Among otheT things that led in August 1984 to an agreement
to undertake a feasibility study into a joint venture mine
at Mt Channaro
I am happy to be able to announce today that almost three
years of patient investigation and negotiation have now
borne fruit.

RURAL POLICY LAUNCH
BUNDABERG 25 JUNE 1987
Two days ago at the Opera House in Sydney I had tho honour
of launchinj our Government's campaign for a renewed mandate
from the Australian people.
Today, another honour falls to me. That is to outline our
policies and set our goals for the great rural sector of
this nation.
But let ne first repeat the central issue at stake on the

The Priae Minister today announced the establishment of the
Antarctic Medal in the Australian system of honours and
awards. This new medal will be awarded for outstanding
service by people connected with Australian Antarctic
expeditions.
Mr Hawke said The Queen had been pleased to approve Letters
Patent and Regulations establishing the Antarctic Medal.
He said theo awards would be announced each year on
Mid-Wintor's Day which had a special significance to
Antarctic oxpeditioners. The first of these awards would be

The Primo Minister announced today that The Queen has given
formal a& proval to the extension of the National Medal
Regulations to include members of Australian Correctional
and Emergency Services.
Previously, the National Medal Regulations provided for the
awarding of the Medal to members of the various police
forces, Zire and ambulance services and the Australian
Protectivo Service who have served diligently for 15 years.
