Prime Minister Hawke has for the first time foreshadowed a treaty, or compact  understanding with Aborigines, in the lead-up to Australia's BiCentennial year. Mr Hawke made the surprise announcement yesterday at the start of his two day visit to the Territory. Louise Maher spoke with him in Alice Springs, here’s her report

LYNEHAM: The Prime Minister's suggestion of a compact
between white and black Australia came during an interview
on Aboriginal community radio in Alice Springs and the
timing of his public comments caught everyone, including
Gerry Hand, the new Aboriginal Affairs Minister, by surprise
not that Mr Hand was anything other than delighted.

It was with the deepest regret that I learned of the death of Alan Reid after a prolonged illness.

Alan Reid was one of Australia's most respected political journalists and the doyen of the Canberra Press Gallery for many years.

His trademarks were his professionalism, his perception, the accuracy and clarity of his reporting, and his personal Integrity.

The Government will recommend the appointment of the
Honourable Mr Justice James Henry Muirhead as Royal
Commissioner to head the joint Commonwealth, State and
Northern Territory Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths
in Custody.
All States and the Northern Territory have given their
support to the Royal Commission and to Mr Justice Muirhead's
appointment as Commissioner. The Government is pleased that
he is available to conduct this inquiry into a matter which
