The launch today of this report, " Towards a Fairer
Australia: Social Justice Under Labor" marks an important
new stage in the life of the Labor Government.
It is the first time that all the facts about what I believe
is a proud Labor record of social justice have been gathered
together in one document.

There is no shortage of great events taking place throughout
Australia this year, in celebration of our Bicentenary.
But one of the greatest, one of the most memorable, and one
of the most exciting of them all is about to begin.

Former United States Governor of Pennsylvania, Mr Richard L
Thornburgh will attend the 1988 celebration of
Australia-America Week as the personal representative of
President Reagan. Governor Thornburgh was Assistant US
Attorney-General under President Ford and is currently
Director of the Institute of Politics at the Harvard
University John F Kennedy School of Government. The
celebration of Australia-America Week marks the close and
continuing ties of friendship between our two countries. 006148

BROADBEACH 23 APRIL 1988
It has been three years since I have had the pleasure of
addressing the HIA Conference. They have been momentous
years for the Australian economy and for all Australians.
They have been a testing time for our community a time
which has required a degree of sustained restraint
unprecedented in peace time.
And it is pleasing to be able to say that the hard work is
beginning to pay off.

Mr John Taylor has been appointed by the Governor-General in
Council as Auditor-General, commencing on 12 May 1988.
Mr Taylor has had a long and distinguished career in the
Public Service beginning with the Postmaster-General's
Department in 1952 and culminating in his most recent
appointment as Australia's Consul-General in New York from
1984 to 1988.
Prior to his appointment in New York, Mr Taylor was
Secretary to the Department of Aboriginal Affairs from 1981

In thanking you for your invitation to address this National
Conference on Child Poverty, I want to congratulate you on
your initiative in convening the conference and t. 9 wish you
well in your deliberations.
It is inevitable that a major focus of your attention today
and tomorrow will be the new cash payments available for low
income families as a result of a campaign pledge I made

The President of the Socialist Republic of Romania, His
Excellency Mr Nicolae Ceausescu, accompanied by Mrs Elena
Ceausescu, will pay a State Visit to Australia from Monday
11 April to Sunday 17 April. They will visit Canberra,
Brisbane and Perth.
The President will have discussions with Federal and State
Ministers on a range of matters, including in particular the
prospects for increasing trade between the two countries.
He will also meet mining company executives in Brisbane and
