It is always a pleasure to address groups of Ajxstralians or
visitors to this country who are involved in advancing the
interests of the Pacific Basin economies.
Because for Australia it is in the Pacific Basin that our
future lies.
At the outset let me stress here as I have in many forums
that Australians are determined to meet the challenge, and
grasp the opportunities, that our involvement in this region

Today we are dedicating the Australian-Hellenic memorial
which symbolises the bonds of friendship which, in time of
peace and of war, have united Australia and Greece.
our friendship has strong roots stretching over a century
and a half of Greek settlement in Australia.

Minister's Olympic Dinner.

The Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and
Trade, Dr Stuart Harris, has informed Mr Hayden and Mr Duffy
that he intends in the near future to take up a senior
academic position at the Australian National University.
The Government and particularly Mr Hayden and I
appreciates the service Dr Harris has provided as head of
one of the central policy departments of Government.
He has made an important personal contribution as Secretary
in helping define the nature and extent of Australia's

At 5.15 pm on December 2nd last year Hazel and I were just
preparing to leave the State guest house in Moscow to drive
to the airport with Soviet Prime Minister Ryzhkov for our
return to Australia. The phone rang with a message that the
personal emissary of Mikhail Gorbachev was on his way to see

His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain and Her Majesty Queen
Sofia will pay a State visit to Australia from 13 to 19 June.
They will be accompanied by their elder daughter Her Royal
Highness the Infanta Elena.
Their Majesties will visit Brisbane, Canberra and Sydney. In
Brisbane they will be guests of honour at the Spanish National
Day at Expo 88 on 14 June.
The visit will add a further dimension to the relationship
between Australia and Spain, characterised as it is by growing
economic links and shared democratic ideals. 006376

VISIT TO AUSTRALIA OF GREEK DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER
The Greek Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Haralambopoulos, will
visit Australia from 18-25 May. He will represent the Prime
Minister of Greece, Mr Papandreou, and be the guest of
Mr Lionel Bowen.
Mr Haralambopoulos will begin his visit in Melbourne where
he will meet members of the Greek community and Victorian
ministers. I look forward to seeing Mr Haralambopoulos in Canberra,
where he will call on Federal ministers, and attend a dinner

John Williamson, Sirocco, The Aboriginal/ Islander Dance
Theatre and Franklyn B Paverty will perform in the Forecourt
at the opening of the new Parliament House by the Queen on
9 may.
The award-winning singer and song-writer John Williamson
will present his traditional Australian songs, and Franklyn
B Paverty will provide bush music from our past.
The versatile energies and traditions of our Aboriginal
people will be represented by the Aboriginal/ Islander Dance
