The Australian Government and people are honoured to welcome
you to our country in our Bicentennial year.
This year we are celebrating 200 years of European
settlement of this continent. But it is right that today we
recall that the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Harbour

Cabinet will meet in Geelong, Victoria on Thursday 7 July
1988.
The meeting is in response to a long standing invitation
from the Geelong City Council and will be held in the City
Hall. The Cabinet is looking forward to visiting Geelong, one of
Australia's major provincial centres, which is celebrating
its sesqui-centenary this year.
My Cabinet has met away from Canberra on a number of
occasions in the past and I intend that we will have further
meetings in regional centres.

The Prime Minister of Ireland, Mr Charles Haughey,
accompanied by Mrs Haughey, will visit Australia from 11 to
16 July as a Guest of the Government.
The visit reciprocates my memorable visit to Ireland last
year, and reflects the contribution of the Irish and people
of Irish descent to all aspects of Australian life, a
contribution of which we are especially reminded in our
Bicentennial year.
In Canberra, Mr Haughey will present Ireland's Bicentennial
gift of convict records to the National Library. He will

country far better equipped to face the future than it was
in March 1983.

Australia is to sign an international treaty aimed at
protecting the ozone layer.
Australia will sign this week the Montreal Protocol on
Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, one of a series of
actions which the Commonwealth is taking to protect the

The. Government is proposing to recommend to the
Governor-General the following appointments:
Following the retirement at the end of the first week of
July of Dr Harris from the post of Secretary, Department
of Foreign Affairs and Trade ( already announced),
Mr R A Woolcott AO, will be appointed to that post.
Mr Woolcott has had extensive experience in the foreign
policy field, holding a number of senior appointments in
that portfolio including in recent years as Australian

integral element of the way Australians govern themselves.
over that time there have been enormous changes in the role
and functions of local government, and in its relationship
with the other two tiers of the national structure of
government. Today there are over 800 local government bodies, over 8,000

The Queen has approved Letters Patent and Regulations
establishing the Australian Fire Service Medal which will
form part of the Australian system of honours and awards.
The Regulations provide for the Medal to be awarded for
distinguished service by a member of an Australian fire
service.
The awards will be made by the Governor-General on the
recommendation of the Minister responsible for each fire
service and will be notified in the Commonwealth of
Australia Gazette. The first awards will be announced in
