CANBERRA 29 NOVEMBER 1989
Tonight's annual dinner of the CAI occurs at a truly
significant time for the debate about the future of the
Australian economy.
It is a time requiring renewed efforts by the Government to
explain to the community the necessity and effectiveness of
the strategy we are following.

Minister, there's been more talk about the possibility of
an economic statement in the early part of next year.
Previously you indicated that the Government will be
making a statement about wages principles after the talks
with the ACTU. Can you give us any indication as to
whether the Government now wants to go further than that?
PM: No I can't. I have nothing really to add on that,

The Government has finalised the terms of reference for the
Resource Assessment Commission's inquiry into forests and
timber resources. I have written to the Hon Justice
D G Stewart, Chairperson of the Commission, formally asking
him to commence the inquiry. A copy of my notice to the
Commission setting out the terms of reference for the
inquiry is attached.
The Resource Assessment Commission was established by the
Commonwealth Government this year to conduct independent

Four new awards the Public Service Medal and three
Defence Force awards have been established under the
Australian honours and awards system. The Queen has
approved Letters Patent and Regulations establishing the
Public Service Medal, the Nursing Service Cross, the
Conspicuous Service Cross and the Conspicuous Service

decision? PM: No, and I haven't had the chance of reading the
total transcript of the Judge's decision but I've seen some
reference where he refers to the right to strike as
fundamental. Well, get this in perspective that the trade
union movement has operated in this country for the last six
years now under the Accord. They've been able to negotiate
wage increases within that system and this sort of situation

LEBANESE PRESIDENT RENE MUAWAD

MR SPEAKER, I SEEK LEAVE TO MAKE A STATEMENT TO THE
HOUSE. HONOURABLE MEMBERS WILL BE AWARE OF THE TRAGIC EVENTS
WHICH HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN LEBANON OVERNIGHT WITH THE
BRUTAL ASSASSINATION OF THE NEWLY ELECTED LEBANESE
PRESIDENT, MR RENE MUAWAD, AND THE DEATH OF AT LEAST
