LAUNCH OF THE GARNAUT REPORT
" AUSTRALIA AND THE NORTHEAST ASIAN ASCENDANCY"
SYDNEY 22 NOVEMBER 1989
When I commissioned Ross Garnaut last year to write a report
for the Government on Australia and Northeast Asia, I did so
with two thoughts in mind.
First, I knew that Ross, with the depth of his experience in
academia, government, diplomacy and commerce, was
extraordinarily well placed to recognise and analyse the

NATIONAL BI-ANNUAL CONFERENCE
CANBERRA 22 NOVEMBER 1989
Last July, in Wentworth, New South Wales, I had the pleasure
of participating in an event unique in Australia's recent
history. As part of the launch of my Government's Environment
Statement I was able to stand with your Secretary
Rick Farley and Phillip Toyne of the Australian Conservation
Foundation and praise them for working together to help the

JOURNALIST: Mr Hawke, Mr Farley has said that the
Government's abandoned its policy for short term
political expediency?
PM: Well he's wrong, of course.
JOURNALIST: Prime Minister, did you offer an inducement
to PM: I categorically deny these totally bizarre and
unsubstantiated allegations. As I said last night, if
anyone has done that from within the Labor Party I would

ZIONIST FEDERATION OF-AUSTRALIA
CANBERRA 21 NOVEMBER 1989
It is a great pleasure to be with you this evening to open
the Zionist Federation of Australia's Canberra office.
My Government and the Federation have always had an
excellent working relationship, and although I would hate to
think that at any time geographical distance might have
constituted a barrier to communication, there is no doubt

JOURNALIST: Prime Minister, Mr Kroger seems to be
backing off a bit today. Are you aware of any senior
Labor figures perhaps suggesting Mr Elliott would do
better off staying in business rather than politics?
PM: If I knew of it I'd move for their expulsion from
the Party. I mean there's no-one who would've been
looking forward more eagerly to Mr Elliott coming into

OPENING OF THE AUSTRALIA-KOREA FORUM
CANBERRA 20 NOVEMBER 1989
When President Roh and I discussed, twelve months ago,
the establishment of an Australia-Korea Forum, we hardly
dared hope that this inaugural meeting would take place
in such positive and favourable circumstances.
But globally, regionally and bilaterally, developments
over the last year have served to demonstrate that a
Forum of this nature is not only desirable in theory but

JOURNALIST; Prime Minister on that theme, a year or so ago
you expressed a wish sometime to go to Antarctica. It didn't
turn out to be practical at that time. Would you hope that
you might be able to do that sometime in the near future?
PM: Very much so. I deeply desire to go down there. I must
say that it was further fired last night. My satellite

PM: What we agree our priority should be is concentrating
on trying to ensure that Tasmania, Hobart in particular, is
given as much work as it can be given in terms of this being
a base for vess oing to the Antarctic. That has a
