President Reagan has invited me to make an official working
visit to the United States. I have accepted with great
pleasure the President's invitation, and shall be meeting
with him at the White House on 13 June, 1983.
The United States and Australia have a strong tradition
of friendship and co-operation and I look forward to
this opportunity to talk with the President about matters
of mutual interest.
It is probable that I shall include visits to some other

In the event that the Tasmanian Government and the H. E. C.
continue to work on the dam in defiance of Commonwealth law,
we will have no alternative but to take, as soon as possible,
the next step in the legal process, which is to seek an
injunction in the High Court to prohibit further work on
the dam.
I note in this respect that Mr Gray has clearly now indicated
that he will abide by any decision of the High Court.
It is certainly not the Commonwealth Government's intention

Traditionally Easter is a time when Australians take the opportunity
for holidays or travel.
Unfortunately, it has also been one of the worst periods on the
nation's roads.
over the next few days all Australians can contribute to avoiding
the tragedy and suffering caused by the road toll.
It is encouraging to note the recent success of efforts to reduce
the road toll.
Random breath testing, for example, has had a significant impact.

Regulations will be introduced under the National Parks and
Wildlife Conservation Act to halt further work on the Gordon
below Franklin dam.
The Federal Government has taken this step only after repeated
requests to the Tasmanian Premier for negotiations and
discussions were rejected.
The Government is still ready to negotiate a settlement of
this issue that acknowledges the legitimate interests of
Tasmanians in ensuring adequate future energy needs and the
protection and generation of employment.

In my invitation to representatives of many sectors of the
Australian community to the National Economic Summit conference
I sought views as to matters that should be covered by the
Conference Agenda.
I have been gratified by the many considered and detailed
responses that I have received.
Consultations have also been taking place with representatives
of employers and the A. C. T. U. on the broad shape of an agenda
for the conference.

During the election campaign I promised to institute a review
of the Parliamentary Contributory Superannuation Scheme.
In particular, the review considered limiting the commutation
of benefits to a lump sum payment.
Restrictions on payment of benefits where beneficiaries were
in receipt of-Government salaries or payments were also
examined.
The review recognised the concern expressed about the level
of some lump sum payments and the potential for larger payments
in the future.
