The Tasmanian Premier, Mr. Gray, must stop dissembling and
playing politics over the Federal Government's decision to
stop funding for the further construction of the Crotty Road.
Mr. Gray is quoted on Monday as claiming that " the first inkling"

The Tasmanian Premier, Mr Gray, is being politically duplicitous
in his reaction to*-the Federal Government's decision to stop
funding for the Crotty Road construction.
The road was to have been the prime access to the
Franklin-below-Gordon Dam.
With construction of the Dam stopped, the Crotty Road is an
expensive thoroughfare to nowhere.
Only last Monday, July 25, at a meeting wi th me, requested by
Mr Gray, the Premier volunteered that the Tasmanian Government was

The Primc Minister, Mr. Hawke, confirmed today that the
Federal Government would be terminating financial assistance
to Tasmania for construction of the Crotty Road.
The Crotty Road, which leads off the Lyell Highway east of
Gormanston, had been intended as the principal access to the
Gordon-below-Franklin dam, and a significant part of the
workforce engaged on the dam project had been working on the
road at the time of the High Court's decision of July 1.

I am very pleased that the Street Royal Commission has
completely cleared the NSW Premier, Mr. Neville Wran, of any
impropriety.
At no stage did I believe that the innuendo levelled against
him had any substance whatsoever.
My respect for Neville, Wran has been increased by the manner
in which he sought to have these charges fully tested by a
judicial inquiry.
I now look forward to Neville Wran very quickly returning to
public life.
He will again be able to make an important and valuable'

The Prime Minister today chaired the first meeting of the
Economic Planning Advisory Council.
EPAC has been set up to continue the process of co-operation
which was begun at the Summit.
Today's inaugral meeting continued that spirit of constructive
co-operation.
The purpose of EPAC is to provide independent community-based
advice to the Government on the broad conduct of economic
policy, particularly in a medium and longer-term context.
The membership of the Council is drawn from Commonwealth and

At the start of the proceedings of the Hope Royal Commission
on Monday counsel for the Federal Government will be making
a statement on the resignation of the former Special Minister
of State Mr. Young.
The statement will detail what Mr. Young told me associated
with the tendering of his resignation.
it will also cover the circumstances in which the Government
at this stage became aware, for the first time, of these
