As I SAID AT THE BRISBANE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ON
MONDAY, THE TIMING OF THIS EXTENSIVE VISIT TO QUEENSLAND
IS ENTIRELY FORTUITOUS. IT HAD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO
WITH THE REMARKABLE EVENTS NOW UNFOLDING; AND OF COURSE,
NO ONE COULD HAVE FORESEEN THEMI
AND OF COURSE, I'D BE THE LAST PERSON TO WANT TO
INTRUDE ON MR BJELKE-PETERSEN'S PROBLEMS; AND I DON'T
PARTICULARLY WISH TO CANVASS THE POLITICAL CRISIS INTO WHICH

Today is the thirty-eighth anniversary of the dropping of an
atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. This event added a new
and terrible dimension to the scourge of war. On behalf of the
Government, I wish to mark the occasion by reaffirming our
dedication to the pursuit of world peace and our commitment to
policies designed to halt and reverse the arms race.

The President of the Republic of Korea, Mr Chun Doo Hwan will
visit Australia on 16-20 October, 1983 at the invitation of the
Governor-General. President Chun will be accompanied by his
wife, Mrs Chun. President Chun will be the first Korean
Head of State to visit Australia since President Park Chung
Hee in 1968.
President Chun's visit, which follows Mr Hayden's recent
visit to the Republic of Korea, reflects the importance both

In Sydney on Monday 8 August, the Prime Minister will
farewell the Australian team to the International Skill
Olympics in Austria.
The farewell will take place at Kirribilli House at noon.
The Skill Olympics will be held in Linz, from August 15-29, and
will involve competition between top young tradespeople from
17 industrial nations.
The Australian team, who are aged between 19 and 21, have been
selected during the past year from 1200 entrants in a round of

The statement by the Leader of the Opposition today about
the evidence I gave to the Hope Royal Commission is wrong and
defamatory. I am disgusted that the Leader of the Opposition would make
such a statement while I am still giving evidence before the
Royal Commission and thus not in a position to respond to
his allegations.
Counsel for the Commonwealth will request the Commission to
convene in open session at 10.00 a. m. tomorrow to consider the
