STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER ON THE OCCASION OF LAUNCHING
OF PRIMARY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 23 JANUARY 1984
THE GOVERNMENT'S OBJECTIVES IN SPORT ARE TWOFOLD;
TO PROMOTE EXCELLENCE AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS IN A
NUMBER OF SPORTS, AND TO ENCOURAGE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION
IN SPORT AMONG ALL SECTIONS OF THE AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITY.
THESE OBJECTIVES ARE MUTUALLY REINFORCING: IF THE
AUSTRALIAN PUBLIC IN GENERAL, AND THE YOUTH OF
AUSTRALIA IN PARTICULAR, CAN TAKE JUSTIFICABLE PRIDE

AT THIS OPENING OF THE FIRST NATIONAL, SCIENCE SUMMER SCHOOL,
THE INITIATIVE IN BRINGING TOGETHER SO MANY STUDENTS
FROM ALL PARTS OF AUSTRALIA AND OVERSEAS IS BOTH TIMELY

Following invitations from the Governments of Japan, the
Republic of Korea# China, Singapore and Malaysia, I will be
visiting North East and South East Asia early in February.
I have been keen to pay early visits to these countries
in Australia's neighbourhood, all in different ways of
great importance to Australia's future.

What sort of a break have you had over the holidays?

at th labour force statistics for the last molith of 1983,

The Prime Minister has decide to lease his family home at Sandringham, in Melbourne, from later this month.

The experience of the last 9 months has demonstrated that it was only possible to spend a relatively few days in Melbourne and this could not justify the need for expensive and continuos security by the Australian Federal Police at the house. 

On future visits to Melbourne Mr and Mrs Hawke will stay at a hotel where necessary.

Mr Hawke said the leasing of the house did not mean he would be spending any less time in Melbourne

The Acting Prime Minister, Mr. Lionel Bowen, announced today
that Mr. Frank Costigan, QC, had been given an extension of
time to finalise his inquiry into the activities of the
Federated Ship Painters and Dockers Union.
Mr. Costigan, who was due to submit his final report by
31 December 1983, is now to finish his task by 30 June 1984.
The extension of time given to Mr. Costigan is to enable him

visit to Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Cyprus and Saudi Arabia. He
