MR. HAWKE, AND THE JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER, MR. NAKASONE. 1/ 2/ 84
1. The relationship between Australia and Japan
is of immense importance to both of us. The warmth of
our relations reflects a common commitment to the ideals
of freedom and democracy, as well as the extensive
co-operation which has been developed in many fields.
As we look towards the 21st century, it is
clear that the Asia-Pacific region will contine to
demonstrate the most rapid and dynamic economic development

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I thought what would be most
useful is if I were to give an outline of the objectives and
themes of the visit that I'm about to undertake in general
terms and then some comments about the particular countries,
and then be open to any questions you'd like to ask.
Obviouslv one of the main purposes of the visit is to establish
a personal contact and exchange views with the regional
leaders that I've not previously met Mr Nakasone, the Prime

Les has made his decision. We are obviously going to have
the services in Canberra of an extremely talented young man in
the person of Bob Tickner. I look forward to welcoming him
into the ranks of the party in Canberra and I know that he will
make a constructive and telling contribution to the affairs of
the party and to the affairs of government.
