In the light of media reports emanating from Paris, I have sought and obtained an assurance that no member of the Australian intelligence and secur-ity community had any foreknowledge of, or involvement in, the sinking of the ' Rainbow Warrior'

I reiterate the Australian Government's condemnation of that cold-blooded, premeditated act of international terrorism and our support for the New Zealand Government's efforts to have the perpetrators identified and brought to justice.

WATSCN: Mr Hawke, what is Australia's response to Mr Mitterand's
invitation to you and other South Pacific leaders to go to Mururoa?
PM: I simply want to say to President Mitterand what I have
said recently and that if he wants to invite the countries of
the region to come to Mururoa so that he can show us how
absolutely safe the tests are then I suggest to the President
that he organise the picking up of all the testing equipment

Professor Jack Richardson, the Commonwealth Ombudsman,
will retire when his second term of office ceases on
23 September 1985.
The Government is still considering a permanent
appointment to replace Professor Richardson. It may be
some little time yet before an announcement can be made.
In the meantime a Deputy Commonwealtn Ombudsman,
Air Vice Marshal J. C. Jordan will act as
Commonwealth Ombudsman.

Federal Cabinet this week discussed the future of phosphate
mining on Chriptmas Island.
Following the meeting the Prime Minister sent the following
message to the Administrator of Christmas Island:
" In 19u4 the Christmas Island phosphate operation was
restructured in an attempt to restore the commercial
viability of the Phosphate Mining company of Christmas
Island Ltd.
unfortunately, the expectations of the restructuring
programme have not been fulfilled.
