JOINT STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER~ AND THE MINISTER FOR
PRIMARY INDUSTRY
The Federal Government has today approved a total 8sst3flcC
package for the sugar industry including price support,
adjustment assistance and research funding.
On price support the Federal Government will guarantee a
No 1 Pool price higher than that proposed by the Savage report.
The Federal Governmrent's decision recognises the serious plight
of the sugar industry and that government assistance

The Australian Government will give $ A750,000 as a cash contribution towards relief operations in Mexico. All Australians will have been shocked by the extent of the disaster and the human toll resulting from the earthquakes over the last few days.

The Australian Ambassador in Mexico City has already announced an initial contribution of $ USl00,000  Tonight's donation will be in addition to that.

Mr Mayor, Distinguished Guests, my colleague, David
Simmons, M-ember for Calare, Ladies and Gentlemen.
I thank you for your welcoming comments Mr Mayor. I am
most pleased to be here in Australia's oldest inland
city ( founded in 1815) for the celebrations of the Ben
Chifley Centenary. It is indeed a great day.

may I express our sorrow and deepest sympathy at
the tragic consequences of the appalling earthquake
in Mexico.
Australians share the grief of those who have lost

BUTTROSE: Everyone in Australia knows that reform of the tax
system was necessary. And the previous Governments have ducked
and dodged the issue for years. So, no-one in Australia
can deny that the tax system needed reform and I believe the
Government is to be congratulated for having the guts to bring
about the reforms. The Prime Minister has been giving interviews
almost non-stop since Treasurer Keating delivered the tax

what he calls his ninth principle oftax reform, this package
has widespread support.
PM: Well, what we were talking about there was a package. Now
you would never have a situation where any package you brought
down it would be -the case that for every single element in the
