to be with you tonight at this celebration to mark the
Anniverrsary of the Regional Dailies Association of
Au Stcr Ii a.
This is not, of course, my first involvement in one of the
Association's annual conferences, having previously been
with you during my ACTU days and again two years ago at your
meeting in Canberra.

The Government has decided to accord a State Funeral to Sir Robert Helpmann in recognition of his distinguished contributions to Australia as a dancer, actor, producer, director and choreographer.

In extending my sympathies to Sir Robert's family yesterday, I said that he had been a true achiever in his field and a fine ambassador for Australia who had helped to demonstrate to the world the diversity of our talents and our capabilities as a nation.

STATEMENT TO PARLIAMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER
ON PUBLIC SERVICE REFORMS
SEPTEMBER 1986
Today I wish to announce a range of decisions taken by the
Government to give'effect to our commitment to improve the
efficiency of the public sector.
These decisions are an essential part of the restructuring
of the Australian economy which has been made necessary by
the decline of international commodity prices and their
consequent effects on our economic circumstances. That
restructuring must involve all sectors of the Australian
