I am pleas~ d to announce that the Prime Minister of India,
Mr Rajiv Gandhi, has accepted an invitation to visit Australia
from 14 to 16 October as a guest of the Government.
I welcome O1r Gandhi's visit and, in particular, look forward to
discussing with him international political and economic issues
of mutual concern, including the very important issue of the
situation in southern Africa on which we have worked closely
together in the Commonwealth context.

I was very sorry to learn of the earthquake which occurred in Southern Greece and of the death, injuries and destruction at Kalamata.

I welcome the agreement which has been reached between the directors of BHP and Mr Robert Holmes a Court and Mr John Elliot, under which Mr Holmes a Court and Mr Elliot will be joining  the Board of BHP.

I believe this settlement will be in the best interests of BHP and of Australia.

I  am pleased to announce that the President of Israel, His Excellency Mr Chaim Herzog, has accepted an invitation to visit Australia in November as a guest of the Government.  

From its foundation Israel has shared with Australia an abiding commxitment to democratic principles and a parliamentary system of Government.

The Jewish community in Australia has made a deep and wide-ranving contribution to the development of our national culture and traditions.

All Australians will have been shocked and outraged by the terrorist attacks in Karachi and Istanbul over the weekend, in which innocent travellers and worshippers have been brutally murdered.

The Australian Government unequivocally condemns such terrorist acts. We deplore the loss of innocent lives.

We express our profound sympathy to those who have been injured and to the families of those who lost their lives.
