PRESS RELEASE
Address by the Acting Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. D. Anthony,
to a meeting of the Economic Advisory Committee of
the Liberal Party of Australia,' at the Liberal Party Federal
Secretariat, Canberra, Friday 19 November 1982.
I suppose it was predictable that the first reaction of many
people to the Government's proposal for a wage pause has been to
ask, if wages are going to be frozen, why shouldn't prices be
frozen as well. This reaction is predictable, and even
understandable. Those who ask this question, however, must

A PROGRAM FOR JOBS
Normally I would not be making a statement at this time
especially since recuperation from this operation takes
some weeks. But the proposal for a special Premiers'
Conference which Mr. Anthony has announced is vital to
our economic future. It is vital to creating more jobs.
I simply want to emphasise how important it is for
people in jobs to be willing to give up something to
help those people who cannot get jobs or who are in

PRESS RELEASE BY THE ACTING PRIME MINISTER, THE RT HON.
J. D. ANTHONY, MP
PROPOSAL FOR SPECIAL PREMIERS CONFERENCE
All of us have become increasingly concerned at the increase
in unemployment.
This has resulted not only from the growing effects of the
international economic recession on the Australian economy,
but also the rapid escalation of wages in Australia in
recent times.
This very substantial increase in wages over the last few
years has-cost a large number-of Australians their jobs.

I wish to advise the House that the Government has approved
a comprehensive package of new arrangements to govern trans-

Australia and New Zealand. These arrangements cover the most
far-reaching economic undertakings that Australia has yet made in
a bilateral agreement.

SOUTH AUSTRALIANELECTION
Statement by the Acting Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. J. D.
Anthony M. P.
Counting so far in South Australia of the votes cast
in the State Election yesterday provides little comfort for
the Labor Party.
Although there has been a swing back from the vote
given to the Liberal Party in 1979, the Liberals, led by
Mr. Tonkin, have clearly attracted an increased core of
support from which they will be able to mount a strong
challenge to Labor at the next poll.
The election was fought very much on South Australian
