MESSAGE TO AUSTRALIAN RUGBY LEAGUE TEAM
The following message has been sent to the
Australian Rugby League team in France before
the final match of their tour of England and
France this Saturday:
Congratulations on your magnificent
achievements in England and France. You
have re-written the record book in a way
which makes us all very proud to be
Australians. My best wishes for a final
convincing win by the unbeaten Kangaroos of
1982.'

Government is hopeful, of a successful outcome at that hearing.
Legislation to implement a 12-month waqes and salaries
pause in the public sector will be introduced in the House of
Representatives tomorrow afternoon.

A national TV campaign against drink driving commenced today
and will run for several months.
" It gives me great pleasure to announce that the campaign is
proceeding * as a result of the co-operative efforts of all
governments", Mr. Anthony said.
One million dollars from the Commonwealth, States and the
Northern Territory will be uised to run the campaign. " Industry

Representatives of the Government and the ACTU met
today in Canberra to discuss aspects of the Wages Pause
agreed to at the Special Premiers Conference in Canberra.
The ACTU was represented by the President, Mr Cliff
Dolan, Senior Vice-President, Mr Charlie Fitzgibbon, Vice-
President, Mr Simon Crean, Advocate, Ms Jan Marsh, and
Assistant Secretaries Mr Bill Kelty, Mr Bill Richardson and

CER SIGNING BY SATELLITE

and Minister for Trade and Resources the Rt. Hon.

The New Zealand Prime Minister, Mr. Muldoon, and I will
sign the H-eads of Agreement of the Closer Economic
Relationship between Australia and New Zealand during a twoway
satellite transmission at noon on Tuesday 14 December.
This will be the first time, to my knowledge, that a
television satellite link has been used for the signing of

VISIT OF THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES

On 6 October, the Prime Minister announced that The Prince
and Princess of Wales would visit Australia in March and April
next year. I am now happy to state that agreement has been reached with
Buckingham Palace on the dates for the visit, which will begin on
Monday 21 March and end on Sunday 17 April.

The Prime Minister today sent the following messagce to
the new Liberal Member for Flinders, Mr Peter Reit-. h.
" Warmest congratulations on an outstanding
campaign and a great result, especially so
since 1982 has been a difficult year.
Flinders was seen as a litmus test on the national
political scene.
In all the circumstances of a by-election the
result must be regarded as an endorsement of
the Government.

I congratulate Mr Peter Reith on his election as the
new Member for Flinders.
In the current difficult economic climate, and taking
account of normal by-election trends, the result in Flinders is
a very good one indeed for Mr Reith and the Government.
The Flinders campaign was fought largely on national
issues. In supporting Mr Reith, the people of Flinders have
maintained their support for the Government's firm and decisive

Together with a number of my senior colleagues, I today
discussed with representatives of the Confederation of Australian
Industry the proposal for a 12-month wage pause that the
Commonwealth Government will be putting to the States next week.
We were very pleased at the response from the CAI.
Members of the CAI indicated their support for the approach
which the Commonwealth was taking, and in particular, the

RETRENCHMENT OF 170 BURRAGORANG VALLEY COAL MINERS
The Miners' Federation's flat rejection of the
overwhelming decision by Burragorang Valley coal miners
to avoid the sacking of 170 men by sharing their jobs
over a four day working week, shows exactly what is wrong
