ELECTORATE TALK
Now that the Federal election results have been finalised,
Australia's 32nd Parliament will assemble next Tuesday for its
official opening by the Governor General.
The constitution requires that after any general election,
the Parliament will be summoned to meet not later than 30 days
after the day appointed for the return of the writs. However,
apart from this constitutional requirement, it was the
Government's vidw that a Parliamentary sitting before Christmas

DEATH OF SIR JOHN McEWEN
Sir John McEwen was a very great Australian.
He served this country in many different capacities in the
Federal Parliament for more than 36 years'.-a very large part
of his working life.
Sir John was elected to the House of Representatives in 1934.
Three years later he was appointed to his first Ministerial
post, Minister for the Interior.
In the early days of World War 2, he was Minister for Exter nal.

THE QUEEN'S VISIT TO AUSTRALIA
The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, will
visit Australia next year. They will arrive in Melbourne
by air from London on Saturday, 26 September, and will
leave Australia from Adelaide on Monday, 12 October.
The primary purpose of the Royal Visit is to enable the
Queen, in her capacity as Head of the Commonwealth to be
present in Melbourne when the Co,-=-onwealth Heads of Government
assemble for their Meeting in 1981 and to meet the

COMMONWEALTH HEADS OF GOVERNMENT MEETING 1981
At the Lusaka Meeting of the Cormmonwealth Heads of Government
in August 1979, Australia's offer to host the 1981 meeting
was accepted.
The 1981 meeting will be the largest Commonwealth Heads of'
Government Meeting so far, with 41 countries now being entitled
to attend, including Zimbabwe and Vanuatu for the first time.
In addition to the Heads of Government it is expected that there
will be many other official delegates including Ministers, and

PRINCE CIHARLES' VISI'T TO AUSTRALIA
The visit to Australia by the Prince of Wales to open the
Anniversary Convention of Apex Clubs of Australia in
Geelong on Friday 17 April. .1981 was announced in London on
Tuesday, 17 June 1980.
At that time I said that the actuail dates for the visit had
yet to be decided and that the itinerary would be announced
as soon as practicable.
I am now able to say that the visit wilL begin in Canberra

Last Tuesday Americans electe d a new President. Governor Reagan
will be sworn in early in the New Year and with him a new
Republican administration will come into office. I have
congratulated President-Elect Governor Reagan, on behalf of the
Government and people of Australia. He has the good wishes of
all of us.
The job of the President of the United States is a truly onerous
one. The problems he faces concern his own country. They are

REVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF GOVERNM-. ENT
AND OF PUBLIC SERVICE STAFFING LEVELS
It has been the Government's continuing aim since 1975 to
mainta'in strict control over the size of the public sector and
of the Public Service.
The Government remains committed to the principle that growth
in the private sector, not expansion of the public sector, is
the right course if permanent reductions in unemployment and
increases in prosperity and wealth for the community as a whole
are to be achieved.
