OFFICE OF NATIONAL ASSESSMENTS
The Government has decided to appoint Mr. N. J. Cook to be
next Director-General of the Office of National
Assessments when the present Director-General
Mr. R. W. Furlonger retires after attaining the age of
Mr. Cook will take up duty in April.
Mr. Cook is currently Deputy Secretary in the Department of
Foreign Affairs. He has served in Egypt, Thailand, the
United States, Indonesia, Vietnam and the United Kingdom.

RETIREMENT OF THE CHIEF JUSTICE
I have today informed the Cabinet of Sir Garfield Barwick's
intention to resign from the Office of Chief Justice of
Australia on and from 11 February, 1981.
Sir Garfield has given great service to Australia in the
highest judicial office. Appointed as Chief Justice on
1 May 1964, he has served longer than any of his
predecessors. He has filled the Office with distinction,
capping his earlier career at the Bar as a Minister of the

ERIC ROBINSON
I was deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death
of my colleague Eric Robinson. With his passing, the
Government, the Liberal Party and the nation have lost
a man of energy and conviction.
Eric Robinson was first elected to the House of
Representatives in 1972 as the Member for McPherson
and was re-elected on four occasions. Since 1975--he
served as Minister for the Capital Territory, Minister

The Australian Government is closely following developments
in and around Poland. we are aware of the very widespread
international concern about the trend of events in that
country and about the possible reaction to them by the

At the conclusion of his address to Parliament last week, the
Governor-General indicated that the Government believes that it
is important to explain to the Australian people the philosophy
which shapes its policies and actions. This seems an excellent
opportunity to make a start.

In Federal Parliament yesterday, the Leader of the Oppositi on
called on the Prime minister to review the classification of
secret documents in light of Monday's ruling in the High Court
against the Federal Government's injunction which sought to
prevent the publication of the book " Documents on Australian
Defence and Foreign Policy, 1968-75". The Prime Minister was
urged to prevent current guidelines being used as a device

TENTS TO HELP EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
Australia is to provide 800 tents to help in the relief
arrangements for the victims of the Italian Earthquake.
The Commonwealth Government haa agreed to share with the
Tasmanian Government the $ 120,000 cost of purchasing the
tents in line with the relief arrangements announced
on 25 November, 1980.
Arrangements are being made to air-freight the tents to
Rome as soon as possible. They will be provided to the Italian
Government for use in relief operations.

ELECTORATE TALK
Australia is to be the host country next year for the Fifth
Session of the World Heritage Committee. This. Committee is
responsible for considering nominations of cultural and
natural sites for inclusion on the world heritage list an
inventory of the wonders of the contemporary world being
prepared under the convention concerning the protection of
the world's cultural and natural heritage.
The convention, to which Australia is a party, was adopted

ITALIAN EARTHQUAKE
The Australian Government joins the Australian people in
expressing our deepest sympathy at the tragic loss of life
and destruction caused by the earthquake that occurred in
the vicinity of Naples late in the evening, of 23 November.
This is the second disaster of this nature to have struck
Italy in the last four years.
Australians share the grief of those who have l. ost members of
their families or friends as a result of -the earthquake.
