EXPOSITION PROPOSAL FOR 1988
The Prime Minister, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, and the Premier of
*. New South Wales, Mr. Neville Wran, today announced that their
two Governments had completed the examination of proposals
to stage a Modified Universal Exposition in Sydney as part
of the Bicentenary celebrations.%
Mr. Fraser and Mr. Wran stated that a great deal of thought
and initiative had been devoted by the Australian Bicentennial
Authority to the development of plans for the Exposition and

BUSHFIRE AT ZEEHAN
I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the people
of Zeehan over the loss of their homes and property and
disruption to their lives in today's bushfire.
The Commonwealth stands ready to provide funds to Tasmania
on a dollar for dollar basis with the Tasmanian Government
for the immediate relief of personal hardship and distress
in accordance with Natural Disaster Assistance arrangements.
This assistance will go towards the provision of food,
clothing and accommodation.

NEW APPOINTMENTS MADE TO HIGH COURT
The Right Honourable Sir Harry Talbot Gibbs has been
appointed as the Chief Justice of Australia.
The new Justice to take Sir Harry's place on the High Court
will be Mr. Justice Francis Gerard Brennan, 52, a Judge of
the Federal Court of Australia.
Sir Harry, 62, the present senior Justice of the High Court,
will take up his appointment on Febuary 12, the day after
the present Chief Justice, Sir Garfield Barwick, retires.

Australians have often done very well in world competition.
They have shown great talent as individuals and they have..
been great coaches. We had done so well for our numbers that
many believed that this would inevitably continue that there:
was some natural sporting superiority in the outdoor loving
Australians. But then victories seemed to be harder, competition
tougher.

Many of us spend the Australia Day long weekend with our
friends and families in sport and recreation. But we also
all recognise that Australia Day is much more than just.

Day Committee designed to foster amongst all Australians an
awareness of what Australia Day stands for, and of its.
significance to us as a growing and prospering nation.

AUSTRALIA DAY MESSAGE
This Australia Day, I am going to talk about some of the
changes which will be taking place in Australia within the
nexct few years. Changes we have worked to bring about
changes that we can greet with optimism and that will benefit
all the Australian people.
At a time when many countries are facing a difficult futu re,
we can look forward with a sense of expectation and enthusiasm
to the prospects ahead of us.
Great changes are at work in Australia which will affect every

COMMUTATION OF DEATH SENTENCE OF KIM DAE JUNG
The Government welcomes the decision to commute the sentence
of death imposed by a military court on 17 September on the
Korean opposition leader Mr Kim Dae Jung.
In urging clemency for Mr Kim I had. made-" clear to the ROK
the deep concern of the Australian Government, the
rarllament, Church leaders, businessmen and of the Australian
community in general.
