AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC FEDERATION
APPEAL LAUNCH
In 19,84, Australian athletes will be taking part iii the
Olympic Games to be held in Los Aingeles. our team will
also compete at the Winter Olympics which will be held
in Yugoslavia in February of the same year.
The Olympic Games are the most famous of all international
sporting competitions. I know that the most important part
of the Olympic ideals is to compete. But I also know that

WATER RESOURCE DEVELOPMENTS SOUTH AUSTRALIA
South Australia stands to benefit substantially from the
$ 640 m. Bicentennial water resources programme announced
last Tuesday. The Government is acutely aware of South
Australia's dependence on the Murray and deeply
concerned about the effects of high salinity levels in
South Australia.
The Bicentennial Programme will be particularly
important in helping to give South Australia better
quality Murray water.

AUSTRALIA DAY MESSAGE
Australia Day is an occasion for all of us to think about what
Australia means to us, and the opportunities and challenges of the
coming year. We can make 1983 a year of real achievement. We
have the resources and the ability to succeed, but it-will only
be a year of achievement if we meet difficulties with a strong
sense of unity, realism, and determination, and if we make the
most of the opportunities this year will offer.

Australians will be sorry to learn of the death of a former Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Francis Michael Forde. Frank Forde was Federal Member for Capricornia from 1922 to 1946, and he also served in the Queensland State Parliament.

The President of the United States, Mr Ronald Reagan, has
invited me to make an official working visit to the United
State. I have accepted that invitation and will meet with
the President in San Francisco on 5 March 1983. Following
the meeting and a working lunch, the President has invited
me to fly with him to Washington for meetings with other
members of his administration.

BHP UTAH DEAL
The Commonwealth Government welcomes the BHP
initiative in acc uiring from General Electric a major
part of Utah International. The arrangements should
not involve any conflicts with the Government's
foreign investment guidelines. Indeed, as a greater
part of Utah's activities are located in Australia,
the result will be greatly increased Australian
ownership and management of key resources industries.

CITIZENSHIP WEEK
The Government strongly believes that more should be done to
promote a greater sense of Australian national identity and
citizenship. As a result, the Government is proposing that
a Citizenship Week should be celebrated every year beginning
on 26 January 1984.
A Citizenship Week will provide an opportunity for national
organisations and community groups to conduct activities which
emphasise our national identity and what it means to be an
