VISIT OF PRESIDENT KARAMANLIS
OF GREECE
The President of the Hellenic Republic, His Excellency
Mr. Constantinos Karamanlis, will make a State Visit to
Australia from Tuesday 9 to Sunday 14 March, 1982, at the
invitation of the Governor-General, Sir Zelman Cowen.
I am looking foward to welcoming President Karam anlis as
the first Greek Head of State to visit Australia.
The visit will be an important opportunity to further
strengthen the already close relations between Australia and

COMMISION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES
The President of the Commission of the European Communites,
Mr. Gaston Thorn, accompanied by his wife and officials,
will visit Australia from Thursday, 25 February to Monday,
1 March?
I am looking forward to welcoming Mr. Thorn as the first
President of the Commission to visit Australia.
The visit will provide an additional opportunity to further
broaden and improve our relationship with the community.

The specia-meeting with Premiers suggested for early
February wi'll be held in Canberra on Friday, 19 February.
I have written to Premiers today suggesting, that in view
of the importance of wages and industrial relations matters
for the Australian economy, there should be a substantial
discussion at the meeting on these matters.

Her Majesty's announcement of the
resignation of Sir Zelman Cowen as Governor-General
of Australia marks the end of a very distinguished
term of service by a most distinguished man in this
high office. On behalf of the Government, I place on
record our deep appreciation of Sir Zelman's service
to his country and our deep respect for the outstanding
way in which he has carried out his duties.

It has been announced from Buckingham Palace
that The Queen, on the recommendation of Her Australian
Prime Minister, has approved the appointment of The Right
Honourab~ le Sir Ninian Stephen, KBE, QC, as Governor-General
of Australia to succeed His Excellency The Right Honourable
Sir Zelman Cowen, AK, GCMG, GCVO, KStJ, QC, whose
resignation will take effect from late in July 1982.

on his retirement and to express the appreciation of the

An Interim Committee representing all Parties has been
formed to develop exchange visits by young people in politics
between Australia and other countries.

with the American Council for Young Political Leaders ( ACYPL),
