ELECTORATE TALK
With the Autumn Session of Parliament about to * commence,
I would likE! to take the opportunity of speaking to you
about Australia's priorities and prospects, about the
challenges we face as a people over the coming months.
We need a proper perspective on our achievements in the
economic arEna because the underlying strength of the
Australian economy is great, and we have the right policies
in place to keep it well on course.

VICTORIAN STATE ELECTION
April 3 will obviously be an enormously important day
for Victoria. It is a State with many achievements.
Victorians will be choosing whether they are going to
stay with the Party and the Government which has given
them the highest household incomes of any state, the
highest home ownership of any state, the highest
savings bank savings of any state and much more reliable
power than New South Wales; or whether they are
going to turn to the very doubtful quantity of

ROYAL VISIT 1982
The Queen has accepted the Governmeni-t' s invitationl to)
extend her visit to Australia for the XII Commonwealth
Games to include Canberra so as to open the Australian
National Gallery on Tuesday, 12 October 1982. The Gallery
is designed to hold the National Collection that has been
built up over the past seventy years by successive Federal
Governments. The Duke of Edinburgh is due to arrive in B~ risbanle on

COMMONWEALTH' ASSISTANCE FOR FLOODS IN THE SOUTHi-WEST REGION
OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
I have written to the Premier of Western Australia concerning
the extensive flooding which has taken place in the South-West
of the State. The Commonwealth has agreed that a number of
relief measures proposed by the Premier would be eligible
for Commonwealth assistance under the natural disaster relief
arrangements. These measures have been estimated to cost a total of*
million and include:

AUSTRALIAN PARTICIPATION IN THE
SINAI PEACEKEEPING FORCE
On 24 November 1981, I said that the announcement
by France, Britain, the Netherlands and Italy of
their intention to participate in the Sinai peacekeeping
Force made it possible for Australia also to participate
in the force. I indicated that we looked forward to
Israel's acceptance of the European offer.
The Governments of both Israel and Egypt have now
accepted the offers made by these four European
countries to participate in the peacekeeping force.

Australia is now a country of fifteen million people. Our
population has doubled since the Second World War. It is.
timely to review some of our achievements over those years, and'-
on that basis to look ahead to the kind of Australia we want
to build for our children.

It is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to launch
the campaign for the construction of N. F. F. House
for the in just two and a half years of existence,
has established itself as an effective and constructive voice
for Australian farmers in the National Capital. In doing so,
it has fulfilled an objective a dream that many in the farming
community had been pursuing since the turn of the century,

DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH POLAND
Because they dared to try to obtain for themselves some small
part of the freedoms which we take for granted, the Polish
people are now suffering appalling hardship and repression
under martial law.
The bare essentials of life are in hopelessly short supply.
Thousands of workers have lost their jobs because they refused
to give up their union membership.
Nobody can doubt that Soviet influence stands behind the

HONORARY ORDERS OF AUSTRALIA
Her Majesty The Queen has approved the Government's
recommendations f * or three honorary appointments to the
Order of Australia.
The awards are of Companion in the General Division of the
order of Australia and mark distinguished service given to
Australia by non-Australians.
This is the second list of honorary awards to be given under

ACTING SECRETARY, THE DEPARTMENT OF PRIME MINISTER
AND CABINET, AND ACTING SECRETARY TO THE CABINET
An Acting Secretary will be appointed to the Department of
the Prime Minister and Cabinet in the absence on sick leave
of the Secretary.. Sir Geoffrey Yeend.
The Acting Secretary will be Mr.* Ian Castles, Secretary,
Department of Finance. Mr. Castles will also be Acting
Secretary to Cabinet. The appointment will take effect from
Monday 25 January, 1982.
