regret at the death yesterday of Mr. A. A. Armstrong,
Member for Riverina, 1965-69, places on record its
appreciation of his long and meritorious public service and
tenders its profound sympathy to his widow and family
in their bereavement".

PRE-BUDGET CONSULTATIONS
As in past years, the Government will be holding pre-Budget
consultations over the next three months with key bodies to
seek their views and ideas in the context of the preparation
of the Federal Budget for 1982/ 83.
The meetings will provide organisations and Ministers with the
opportunity for a frank exchange of views on the State of the
economy and discussion of appropriate Budgetary policy measures.
The Government believes that these annual-meetings are extremely

ELECTORATE TALK
HMAS Tobruk, the Royal Australian Navy's supply ship, left
last week for the Middle East with the eight Australian
helicopters;, and other equipment for Australia's contingent
in the Sinai Peacekeeping Force. The troops of our main
contingent,. numbering in all about 120 men, will fly out
later, in time to establish themselves at their posts by
March. But their big starting day will be 25 April.
That is the date laid down in the Treaty of Peace between

The Prime Minister and the Premiers of Victoria, Queensland,
South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania in

R~ OYAL COMMISSION INTO THE ACTIVITIES
OF THE BUILDERS LABOURERS' FEDERATION
The Prime Minister and the Premier of Victoria
jointly announced today that the life of the BLF
Royal Commission had been extended to 30 April 1982.
As is -apparent from reports of its proceedings, the
Commission has been examining evidence of serious
malpractLice in relation to the BLF and certain of its
officers. The Commission had indicated that it would
need such an extension of time in order to investigate

ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBING OF D) ARWIN
Friday, February 19, is the 40th anniversary of one of the
most significant days in the history of Australia., ' It marks
the first occasion when Australia was attacked by an external
aggressor.
On the morning of 19 February 1942, Darwin was attacked by
81 Japanese aircraft carrying experieniced aircrew who had
participated in the devastating raid at Pearl Harbour on
December 7 1941. This sudden attack on Darwin caused

" HELP POLAND LIVE" APPEAL
The Government has decided to give tangible support to the
generosity of the Australian community by making donations
to the national " Help Poland Live" Appeal during the current
financial year tax deductible. This supplements the Government's
decision late last year to make a cash grant of one million
dollars to the appeal.
The appeal is organised by the Australian National Committee for
Relief to Poland, chaired by Mr Frank Galbally, CBE, and with

The following letter was sent to the Premier of Tasmania
today:
My dear Premier,
Irefer to your telex of 15 February to me and the Premier of
Victoria concerning the possible use of the Modular Airborne
Fire Fighting System installed in a RAAF Hercules aircraft
for fire fighting in the present Tasmanian fires.
I also have your telex of 16 February in which you advise that
your Government has found it necessary to declare a State
wide special emergency.
