GRANTS FOR I. W. Y.
Additional funds and assistance for International Womens'
Year special projects have been approved by the Government.
A total of $ 153,074.37 has been allocated to 26
individual domestic projects.
The largest grant ($ 53,000) will help set up a womens' centre
in Port Hedland which was hit by a cyclone late last
year. The grants were approved on the advice of the National
Advistory Committee for International Womens Year.

The position in the Ministry left by the resignation of
Mr R. V. Garland will now be filled.
Mr Robinson will remain as Minister for Post and Telecommunications
and as Minister assisting the Treasurer.
Mr A. A. Staley will become Minister for the Capital Territory.

VISIT TO NEW SOUTH WALES FLOODS
The Prime Minister, Mr Malcolm Fraser, visited flood
stricken areas of north western New South Wales today.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by Mrs Fraser, and
by the Minister for Health, Ralph Hunt and the Deputy
Director General of the Natural Disasters Organisation,
Mr. R. Vardanega.
He visited Moree and Walgett, where he talked with local
government officials and with representatives of the NSW
State Emergency Service.

New bouth Wales Floods
The Prime-Minister :: said~ today-that the
Commonwealth and the New South Wales Governments were
working together in a co-operative and-expeditious way
to assist individuals, businesses 2. nd public authorities
in need as a result of the floods which had occurred
in the Northern and Western areas. of the State. 7'
The Premier of New South Wales has today
announced details of measures of relief and restoration.

ADDRESS TO BRISBANE PRESS CLUB 13 FEBRUARY 1976
Since the elections in December, the Government has concentrated on
getting its economic programme under way. The first priority of
the Government should by now be well understood. It is to bring
inflation under control. Until this is done, there waill be no real
return to confidence in the economy and no soundly based expansion
of job opportunities. Fortunately, there is increasing appreciation
of the absolute importance of tackling inflation and tackling it

ADDRESS AT A PRIVATE LUNCH FOR DR WALDHEIM
I would like to welcome Mr Waldheim to Australia. It is
years since Australia has been honoured by a visit from the
Secretary-General and I hope that it will not be another
years until the Secretary-General, present incumbent or his
successor I do not know how long his ambitions go into the
future comes here again.
The Secretary-General's job is obviously a very difficult one.
It requires many skills and it, requires a broad philosophy.

NEW PUBLIC SERVICE AND STATUTORY AUTHORITY STAFF CEILINGS
As a result of recommendations made to me by the Public Service Board,
by the Treasury and by my owmn Department, further revised staff ceilings
have been approved for the Public Service and for Statutory Authorities
financed wholly or partly from the budget..
These ceilings have been set taking fully into account the services that
must be supplied to the Australian public.
They represent staff levels which the three departments believe to be

AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL
Dr J. A. L. Matheson, Chairman of the Interim Council has been asked to form
a small group to advise me on the role of a continuing Science and Technology
Council, its terms of reference, and all other matters concerning its
operation. The other members of the Advisory Group will be
Professor G. M. Badger, Vice-Chancellor, The University of Adelaide.
Professor Sir Rutherford Robertson, Director, The Research School
of Biological Sciences, Austral an National University.

The Governor-General has accepted the resignation of the
Honourable R. V. Garland, as Minister for Post and Telecommunications.
The Governor-General has appointed the Minister for the Capital Territory,
the Honourable Eric Robinson, M. P. as Minister for Post and
Telecommunications, which office he will hold in addition to his nffice
ot Minister for the Capital Territory.
