LEBANON
The Prime Minister, Mr Malcolm Fraser, made the following statement
today on the situation in Lebanon:
" The continued fighiting and destruction in Beirut, costing the
lives and destroying the livelihood of innocent and powerless
Lebanese citizens, is of the gravest concern to the Australian
Government and people.
Australia has always been deeply conscious of the age-long
suffering of the Jewish people and their right to a homeland.

MR JOHN HOWARD)-REMUNERATION TRIBUNAL 1982 REVIEW
The Remuneration Tribunal's 1982 Review, which is being released
today, sets a clear example of wage restraint. The Tribunal,
properly, has placed great weight on the submissions put to it
by the Government regarding the economic situation facing Australia.
As a result, the Tribunal has decided that the salary increases
for politicians, senior officials and judges, should be kept as

COMMONWEALTH ASSISTANCE TO LOCAL GOVERNMENT
The Acting Prime Minister, John Howard, announced today that
local authorities will this year receive from the Commonwealth
an increase in general revenue assistance.
Premiers have been advised that $ 424.49 million will be made
available to the states for passing to local government authorities
as general revenue assistance in 1982-83 under arrangements
provided by the Commonwealth in the Local Government ( Personal

ROYAL CHRISTENING GIFT
To mark the occasion of the christening of
HRH Prince William of Wales on Wednesday, 4 August,
the-Australian Government, on behalf of the people
of Australia will be presenting Prince William
with a collection of children's books by Australian
authors. The books will be in a presentation cabinet made of
Australian blackwood.
The books will be forwarded to the Australian
High Commissioner in London who will arrange for

The backdown of the Cain Labor Government on probate in
Victoria is yet another example of the confusion that follows
Labor Governments as their doctrinaire policies come face to
face with outraged comamonsense. The determination of the
Cain Government to re-impose probate on Victorians when the
rest of Australia had seen the great practical. difficulties
of the tax, and the damage it would do, shows very plainly indeed
