MISREPRESENTATION
The Prime Minister made the followi ng statement in the House
this afternoon:
" With your indulgence, Mr. Deputy Speaker, for the sake of
accuracy, I should like to add to an answer I gave to a question
asked this morning.
This morning the Leader of the Opposition ( Mr. Whitlam)
said that I had used a single line quotation from the Flowers
Report. The single line quotation, as he indicated in his
question, was as follows:

GLADSTONE POWER STATION
The Prime Minister, the Right Honourable J. M. Fraser, and
the Premier of Queensland, the Honourable J. Bjelke-Petersen,
announced today that agreement had been reached on a request
by Queensland for the provision of further assistance to
Queensland for the Gladstone Power Station.
The Prime Minister recalled that under the Gladstone Power
Station Act 1970, the Commonwealth had provided financial
assistance of $ 140 million as the agreed Commonwealth share

SURVEY BY OFFICE OF YOUTH AFFAIRS
The Government has approved surveys by the Office of Youth Affairs
of two urgent problems affecting young people in Australia.
The Office has been asked to make a submission to the
Committee of Inquiry in Education and Training ( the Williams Inquiry)
taking account of the views of young people, particularly
the views of long term unemployed early school leavers. The
submission will be concentrating on the problem of transition
from school to work and the appropriate roles of schools and

STUDY GROUP ON MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
The Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, announced today the membership
and terms of reference of a group to undertake a study of the
adjustment problems of the most highly protected Australian
manufacturing industries.
Mr. Fraser had announced on 26 August in a speech to the
Chamber of Manufactures of New South Wales that Sir John
Crawford would be Chairman of the group to conduct the study.
The other members of the group will be Sir Brian Inglis

MR WHITLAM'S NATIONAL BROADCAST ON
URANIUM'
The Leader of the Opposition last night made a
National Broadcast -about Australia's decision on uranium which
was dishonest and deceptive. It misleads the Australian public
and provokes division within the community. It contains
selective quotation and misrepresentation.
Mr Whitlam said that the Government's decision
commits Australia to the export of uranium regardless of the
lack of international.-controls to prevent the spread of

The Opposition Leader quoted last night in his National
Broadcast from the Prime Minister's Report to the Nations
The relevant passage from Mr. Whitlarn's text was as follows:
" Let me emphasise as forcefully as I can that here the
scientific knowledge does exist. The technology does
exist. The scientific knowledge and technology have been
applied to the problem of waste. The technology is knowni."

about the conservation of energy and the need to develo-p energy
resources and technology for the benefit of all people.

The Prime Minister announced today the Government's intention to establish a Community Arts Board within the Australia Council. The Board will have the same powers and status as other Council Boards, and its creation will bring the number of Council Boards to seven.

REVIEW OF POST-ARRIVAL PROGRAMMES AND SERVICES TO MIGRANTS
The Government has decided to establish a review of post-arrival
programmes and services provided to migrants by the Commonwealth.
and non-Government organisations supported by Commionwealth
funding.
The Review Group will be headed by Mr. F. Galbally, a
prominent Melbourne barrister.
The Review will commence immediately, and its first meeting will
be in Canberra tomorrow, September 1.

REPORT TO THE NATION
In 1975, the Labor Government established the Ranger Uranium
Environmental Inquiry under the chairmanship of Mr. Justice Fox.
That Inquiry has since reported. The reports have become known
as the Fox Reports.
After the Inquiry had been established, the Labor Government also
signed and tabled in the Parliament a Memorandum of Understanding
with the companies involved with the Ranger Mine, committing the
Government of the day to joint development with those companies.
