and Australia.
I do not think there is really any need in this company to dwell
overlong on the importance of the relationship between America
and Australia.
The United States of course is important to every society but
maybe a little more important to those societies which have

ADDRESS AT CHINESE DELEGATION FAREWELL DINNER
Mr Vice-Chairman, since we first met you, just a week ago
you have travelled across part of our country. You have
seen the cities of Sydney and Melbourne and some of our rural
areas. In this respect your trip somewhat resembles my own
visit to China last year when I saw, not only your great cities,
but also more remote areas, including Urumchi.
You will have gained some impressions of our people, our way
of life and our countryside. But Australia, like China,

The Government believes this measurement, the broadest based

BUDGET DEBATE
Mr. Speaker, the Budget brought down by the Treasurer consolidates
and advances the achievements which the Government has already made
in fighting inflation and restoring a healthy economy.
For the second time, we have a Budget which reduces the deficit
by over half a billion dollars, firmly controls the rate of
increase in Government spending, and creates the conditions for
a further reduction in inflation and further " economic growth. At

There is now a better understanding amongst most Australians of
the difficulties facing many primary producers.
In many cases prices have stayed at low levels while costs have
risen sharply over the last five years. Thus it has become
necessary for the Commonwealth Government to give greater
assistance to primary industry. The present Government has taken
