APPOINTMENT OF ASSOCIATE COMMISSIONER TO THE INDUSTRIES
ASSISTANCE COMMISSION Mr F. Pascoe
The Prime Minister, Mr E. G. Whitlam, M. P."
announced today that Mr Frank Pascoe has been appointed as an
Associate Commissioner to the Industries Assistance Commission
for the inquiry into the clothing industry, which is part of
the Tariff Review program.
Mr Pascoe has had extensive experience as a senior
executive in manufacturing companies and organisations. He is

MAJOR DEVELOPMENT AT PORT MORESBY AIRPORT
The Prime Minister, Mr E. G. Whitlam, M. P.,
announced today that a $ 7.6 million contract had been awarded f or
major development works at the Port Moresby airport.
Mr Whitlan said the work included construction of
a new runway, taxiways, parking apron and associated works. The
project was being wholly financed by the Australian Government as an
aid project for the Papua New Guinea Government, and was the

AUSTRALIA TO SEEK PRESIDENCY OF U. N. GENERAL ASSEMBLY NEXT YEAR
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, confirmed today's press
report that in ' March of this year, prior to the general elections,
Australia had begun actively to seek support for the candidature
' of the Foreign Minister, Senator Willesee, for the Presidency of
the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1975.
Mr Whitlam said that, on the assumption that
Senator Willesee would be re-elected to the Ministry and

Australia has just come through a national election in
which, whatever you may hear to the contrary, there were clear
winners and clear losers. In the decision you are taking here this
evening, however, there are no losers, only winners. The nation
wins, because each new citizen represents an increase in the strength

Public Comment by Public Servants,
The Prime Minister announced today that the
Governor-General in Council had approved the repeal of
Public Service-Regulation 34( b) which has prohibited
public comment by officers of the Australian Public Service
on administrative matters. Mr Whitlam said the Government
had asked the Public Service Board to issue guidelines to
public servants explaining fully the effects of the repeal
and outlining the new arrangements.

one of the most impressive aspects of the recent
election campaign was the public involvement and commitment of
men and women whose voices are not often heard in political affairs.
For me, there was no better, no more moving an example of this
than a meeting here in the Sydney Opera House only 5 days before
the people went to the polls.

TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE AUTHORITY REPORT MUSHROOMS
The Prime Minister today released the report of the
Temporary Assistance Authority on Mushrooms.
on 8 March 1974, Mr Whitlam asked the Temporary Assistance
Authority whether it is necessary that urgent action be taken to
protect the Australian industry producing mushrooms and prepared
or preserved mushrooms in relation to the importation of mushrooms
in various forms.
