MESSAGE TO PRESIDENT GERALD FORD
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, today sent
the following message to President Gerald Ford:
" I wish you every success as you assume
the great responsibilities of the
Presidency. You can be assured that my
Government, and Australians at large,
are confident of a continuation of the
good relations that exist between our two

LAND TENURE
Cabinet this week supported a recommendation in the first
report of the Commission of Inquiry into Land Tenures uing that
any future capital profits arising from a change of land use
be retained by public authorities rather than by individuals.
The recommendation endorsed by Cabinet was made in the
report of the Commission under Mr. Justice Else-Mitchell tabled
in Parliament on 4 December last year.

The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, today released the
Industries Assistance Commission Report on Gloves, Mittens
or Mitts. Mr. Whitlam said that the Government's decision on the
report will be announced at the earliest practicable date.

PRICES JUSTIFICATION TRIBUNAL REPORT ON PROPOSED INCREASES
IN INTERSTATE FREIGHT RATES BY
MAYNE NICKLESS LIMITED
I have received the attached report dated 2 August
of the Prices Justification Tribunal on proposals by
Mayne Nickless Limited to increase interstate freight rates
by 18 per cent.
The Tribunal considers that an increase of only
12 per cent would be justified, operating no earlier than
August. In its submission, the company . relied principally on

REVISED AUSTRALIAN VISA POLICY
The Australian Government has informed the Governments
of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and Fiji
that it has decided to require all persons entering Australia
for settlement or temporary stay to obtain visas.
This will remove a long-standing discriminatory practice
from Australia's immigration policy. For over 70 years European
British subjects ( now Commonwealth citizens) and Irish citizens

VISIT BY PRINCE HIRO
The Prime Minister. Mr Whitlam announced tonight
th; t flis Imperial Highness Prince Naruhito would visit Australia
to gain experience of life abroad and to widen his international
perspective. The Japanese Foreign Ministry announced
Prince Hiro's visit after a meeting of the Japanese Cabinet
early today. His Imperial Highness Prince Naruhito is in the
third year of Middle School. He is to leave Tokyo on 16 August
for a stay of 15 days in Australia. He will travel via Sydney

PRIME MINISTER: Are there any questions?
QUESTION: Is it true as Senator Michael Townley alleged in the
Senate today that the Government is proposing to acquire two
Boeing 707' s from Qantas. Have you asked that these planes be
ready for your trip to Indonesia or for any trip anywhere for
that matter? Can these planes be sold by Qantas for $ 20 million,
could the cost of running these planes by $ 12 million a year?
