THE PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT
HAVE NATIONAL IMPLICATIONS QUITE DISTINCT FROM THE-IR
RELEVANCE TO PARTICULAR LOCALITIES. WHEN THE
INSTITUTE OF MUNICIPAL ADMINISTRATION WAS ESTABLISHED
' IN 1952 ON A FEDERAL BASIS IT REALISED THAT " WHILE
LOCAL GOVERNMENT IS LOCAL AND, IN FACT, DERIVES ITS
FUNCTIONS'FROM EACH RESPECTIVE STATE, THE DEVELOPMENT

INAUGURAL MEETING OF THE NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE, CANBERRA
ONE OF THE REGULAR AND OFTEN UNNOTICED
ACTIVITIES OF THE UNITED NATIONS IS ITS DESIGNATION
OF INTERNATIONAL YEARS FOR THE PURPOSE OF DRAWING
ATTENTION TO MATTERS OF HUMAN SIGNIFICANCE. ' FOR
INSTANCE IN THE PAST DECADE THERE HAVE BEEN
PROCLAIMED SUCH YEARS AS
INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION YEAR ( 1965)
INTERNATIONAL YEAR FOR HUMAN RIGHTS ( 1968)
INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION YEAR ( 1970)

The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, today announced that he had sent a reference to the Temporary Assistance  Authority on the question of temporary assistance for the Australian industry producing footwear and parts therefor.

REFERENCE TO THE TEXTILES AUTHORITY
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, announced today
that he had sent a reference to the Textiles Authority within
the Industrie-s Assistance Commission covering yarns, knitted
fabrics and towelling. Mr Whitlam said that this action was
being taken as a result of high and rising levels of imports
and an apparent total availability of such goods on the
Australian market substantially in excess of previous levels'.

The Prime Minister today announced the membership of   the Australian National Advisory Committee for International   Women's Year.

The Prime Minister said that the Government had   been, fortunate in being able to obtain in the people selected   a blend and balance of expertise and experience.   Ms Elizabeth Reid, adviser on matters relating to women, will   be the convener of this Committee; its other members are:

The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, today released two reports of the Industries Assistance Commission on Polyamide and Polyester Yarns, and Tyre Cord and Tyre Cord Fabrics.

Mr Whitlam said that the Government's decisions on the reports will be announced at the earliest practicable date.

I know I speak for all Australians in expressing my profound sense of sorrow at the death of Lady Kerr.

Australia has lost a woman of great vitality and charm, a strong and vigorous personality of high ideals and high attainment who will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Sir John Kerr has lost a loyal and devoted wife, a woman richly equipped to share with him the burdens of his high and arduous office, an office he assumed with a ready spirit of service and a full consciousness of the responsibility it imposed.

BRICK AND PIPE INDUSTRIES LIMITED
Brick and Pipe Industries Limited have notified
their acceptance of the findings of the Prices
Justification Tribunal in its report of 5 August 1974
in relation to certain higher prices proposed by the
company. When received, the revised price list will be
available for inspection at the offices of the Prices
Justification Tribunal 10 Queens Road* Melbourne or
100 William Street, Sydney.

ALCOA OF AUSTRALIA LIMITED
Alcoa of Australia Limited has notified its
acceptance of the racent findings of the Prices
Justification Tribunal in the following terms:
" In accordance with the opinion of the Prices
Justification Tribunal dated 16 August 1974, Alcoa
of Australia Limited will limit its published price
increases in regard to the above matters to the
following weighted average amounts:
Primary Aluminium Ingot .5.30 per kg.
