PRIME MINISTER TO MEET PRESIDENT FORD
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, said tonight that
he would be meeting President Ford during his forthcoming
visit to the United States.
Mr. Whitlam said that he would be visiting Washington
after addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New
York, and would call on the President on Friday, 4 October
at the White House.

GOVERNMENT TO REASSESS ANL FREIGHT RATES TO AND FROM TASMANIA
The Prime Minister, Mr E. G. Whitlam, announced tonight
that the Australian Government will make an immediate
reassessment of A. N. L. freight rates to and from Tasmania.
This follows strong representations by Tasmania's
federal Members and Senators who met this morning with the
Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, and the Minister for Transport,
Mr Jones. The Prime Minister has ordered that the reassessment

SUBURBAN RAILWAY LINE EXTENSION EAST HILLS TO GLENFIELD
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, today reassured
residents of East Hills in Sydncy that the Australian
Government would protect their interests in planning the
route of the suburban railway line extension from East Hills
to Glenfield. Mr. Whitlam was commenting on fears expressed by
residents that the railway extersion would result in the
wholesale resumption of private homes.

VISIT BY SHAH OF IRAN
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, announced today
that Their -Imperial Majesties, the Shahanshah Aryamehr and
the Shahbanou of Iran, would pay a State Visit to Australia
at the invitation of the Governor-General, Sir John Kerr,
from 20-27 September 1974.
Mr Whitlam said that the visit would serve to
strengthen the friendly relations existing between
Australia and Iran. During their stay Their Majesties
would visit New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland,
as well as Canberra.

PUBLIC SERVICE BOARD WAGE DECISION
The Pr. Lme Minister, Mr. E. G. Whitlam said today
that he welcomed the decision of the Public Service Board
to grant no further increase to Public Servants in the
clerical, postal and keyboard areas beyond the $ 16 per
week increase which had been announced by the Board on
June 21. Mr. Whitlam said that the decision of the Public
Service Board was an important example for the rest of
the community of the restraint which his Government sought.

Industries Assistance Commission Report Gloves,
Mittens or ' Mitts
The Primc Minister, Mr E. G. Whitlam, announced
today that the Government has accepted the recommendations of
the Industries Assistance Commission in its report on glovrs,
mittens or mitts. The report was released on 6 August 197'.
The Government's decision to implement the Commission's
recommendation will mean that a General rate of duty of 25% will

REFERENCE TO INDUSTRIES ASSISTANCE COMM\ ISSION
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, announced today
that he had forwarded a reference to the Industries Assistance
Commission on whether assistance should be accorded the
production in Australia of soaps and other detergents and
other related products.
This reference has been forwarded to the Commission
following the recommendation of the Joint Committee on Prices
