Industries Assistance Commission Report
Wood and Metal-Working Machinery, Etc.
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, announced today
that the Government has accepted the recommendations of the
Industries Assistance Commission in its repo rt on Wood and
Metal-Working Machinery, Etc.
The Government's decision to implement the
Commission's recommendations will mean that duties of
General will apply to gas operated welding, etc. equipment

Industries Assistance Commission Report
Woven Man-Made Fibre Fabrics
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, today announced
the Government's decision on the report of the Industries
Assistance Commission on Woven Man-Made Fibre Fabrics.
Mr Whitlam said that the Government accepted the
long-term level of assistance of 40% for " traditional"
fabrics of nylon or polyester but not polyolefin) as
recommended by the Commission but because of problems

IMPORT POLICY FOR 1975
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, announced today
a program of action for 1975 aimed at reducing current pressures
from import competition on employment in certain industries.
The Prime Minister said this action followed a
recent review of import trends undertaken by himself, the Deputy
Prime Minister, Dr Cairns, and the Minister for Manufacturing
Industry, Mr Enderby. The Prime Minister said it was clear that high levels

INTERIM REPORT FROM I. A. C. ON FARM INCOME STABILISATION
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, announced today
that he had asked the I. A. C. to provide an interim report
by 30 June 1975 on two recommendations made in the Green
Paper on Rural Policy.
The two recommendations related to income tax
measures being taken either by means of tax averaging
provisions or income equalisation deposits to reduce
fluctuations in the incomes of rural producers.

QUEENSLAND ELECTION
The results in Queensland will disappoint all
Labor supporters and disillusion all believers in a healthy
Parliamentary democracy. I very much regret that Perc Tucker, an able
leader and a close friend has lost his seat in Townsville.
He fought a clean, honourable and vigorous campaign.
It is unhealthy that with 36.4% of the vote
Labor seems likely to hold only 10 or 12 seats out of 82.
The Liberals under Sir Gordon Chalk won 4%

PAPUA NEW GUINEA TRANSFER OF POWERS
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam, said this
evening that the Australian Government welcomed the
initiative of the Papua New Guinea Government in requesting
that authority over defence and foreign relations, the
Papua New Guinea Supreme Court and other leqal matters
be transferred' to Papua New Guinea as soon as practicable.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE GRANTS COMMISSION, THE AUSTRALIAN
ATOMIC COMMISSION AND THE CHIEF OF THE AIR STAFF
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam announced today
that the Executive Council had agreed to the following
appointments. Mr D. V. Moye, who is Secretary of the Grants
Commission, has been appointed a full-time member of the
Grants Commission from 1 January 1975. His appointment is

TEXTILE FLOOR COVERINGS REFERENCE TO THE TEXTILES AUTHORITY
OF THE INDUSTRIES ASSISTANCE COMMISSION
The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlan, announced today that
he had sent a reference to the Textiles Authority within the
Industries Assistance Commission covering certain textile
floor coverings. Mr. Whitlam said that this action was being
taken as a result of high and rising levels of imports and an
apparent total availability of such goods on the Australian
market in excess of previous levels.
